Nasdaq jumps 3.7%, most in 4 months, as Big Tech surges

Technology companies powered stocks higher on Wall Street on Tuesday, driving the Nasdaq to its biggest gain in four months and more than making up for a sharp skid a day earlier. The Nasdaq surged 3.7%, led by gains in Big Tech firms such as Apple, Amazon and Facebook.

The tech stocks rally followed a decline in bond yields, which have been increasing rapidly in recent weeks, driving up longterm interest rates. Higher bond yields tend to pull money away from highpriced stocks like technology companies.

The S&P 500 rose 54.09 points (1.4%) to

3,875.44. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 30.30 (0.1%) to 31,832.74. The Nasdaq gained 464.66 (3.7%) to 13,073.82. The Russell 2000 index of small-company stocks added 42.07 (1.9%) to 2,245.06.

Need a good belly laugh?

These days, of course you do.

Dwyane Wade is here to provide it for you, courtesy of his former teammate Shaquille O’Neal.

On Wednesday, Wade tweeted out a video of Shaq, with whom he played from 2004 to 2008, sleeping on the job.

In the quick clip, Wade and O’Neal are behind the scenes at TNT’s “Inside the NBA” show in Atlanta, where the former LA Lakers star is an analyst.

Shaq is leaning back on an office chair wearing a bizarre astronaut like helmetmeets-face shield, snoring loudly.

“What the hell is going on in here?” Wade says, snickering into the camera, “We supposed to be working!”

In the comments, you see a lot of laughing emojis and jokes but some sympathetic people note that the 48-year-old ex baller has a medical condition and the “helmet” is actually headgear called a PAP machine.

“For anyone wondering, that’s for sleep apnea. Makes sure he keeps breathing,” wrote one concerned fan.

All joking aside, we want a job like that.

Femicide protests in Mexico City turned violent Monday after women clashed with riot police stationed outside the National Palace, the residence of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who activists says has failed to take seriously rampant sexual violence, leading to the deaths of 10 women a day.

López Obrador, also known by the acronym AMLO, dismissed the protests that coincided with International Women’s Day, arguing the they were spurred by his conservative opponents. The president has in recent weeks stoked the anger of many women for his support of a gubernatorial candidate accused of sexual assault, alongside continuing high cases of gender-based violence.

Ahead of Monday’s planned protest, police set up a barricade around the presidential palace. A spokesperson described it as a “peace wall” to prevent vandalism, the Guardian reported. But protesters said the barrier was symbolic of the president’s refusal to take on the issue, noting that he frequently makes a show of traveling in drug cartelcontrolled parts of Mexico but felt unsafe ahead of their protest.

Women instead plastered the barriers with slogans and the names of murdered women. Nearly 1,000 women in Mexico were victims of femicide in 2020, according to an official database, The Guardian reported. Some of the cases have been particularly brutal: Last February, 25-year-old Ingrid Escamilla was stabbed to death, cut up and partially skinned.

The barrier also became the site of clashes between protesters and police on Monday after some protesters tried to tear parts of it down. Riot police with shields, batons and tear gas responded with force to push the women back.

At least 19 civilians and 62 officers were injured, Marcela Figueroa, an official of the city’s police agency, told the Guardian.

Protests against femicide in Mexico have become increasingly common, as some activists say it has become the only way to get the government’s attention.
