Miami, Florida - David Zugman passed away March 20, 2021 at the age of 90.

Born in Sokol, Poland as Dov, David was the only child of Judith and Josef Zugman. His father was a grain merchant until forced to give up his business to the Russian occupiers. He was murdered shortly after by the Germans, following their rout of the Russians. His mother was a seamstress who was able to feed her son with her talents, until both were forced to hide in the countryside. Betrayed by one of her customers, his mother was shot and killed. David managed to escape and live the next couple of years by his wits, relying on the kindness of strangers.

After the war, David found himself in a displaced children’s camp in Italy where he attended school, something he loved. While there, he was connected with an uncle in New York, who began the process of sponsoring him. Unable to move directly to New York, he had to start in Montreal, Canada. Speaking no English upon his arrival, he still managed to graduate high school with honors in just two years.

Despite having family in New York, he was expected to make his own way. Working odd jobs during the day, he attended City College at night, studying accounting and completing all the requirements to become a CPA.

During this period of time he met his late wife, the former Jean Cohen, who he married in 1960. The two moved down to South Florida, where David took a job with the firm Hoch, Schriber and Frey. Six years later he became a named partner. A few years ago, he and Fred Weinstein – one of the other partners in the firm – a created Weinstein Zugman, LLC, where he remained active until his retirement at age 89.

David and Jean never had children of their own, but they “adopted” the children of their many friends, all of whom still speak of “Uncle David” and “Aunt Jean.”

Over the years, David was involved with local politics and Child Survivors of the Holocaust of South Florida. He remained active with the latter until the Covid pandemic ended personal gatherings. David was committed to the State of Israel throughout his life.

The funeral will be Wednesday,March 24, 2021, at 1PM. He will be interred at Evergreen Cemetery in Fort Lauderdale, next to his beloved Jean.
