Miami Beach girls win GMAC water polo title

The Miami Beach girls’ water polo team came from behind to edge

MAST Academy 10-8 to win the GMAC championsh­ip.

Trailing 7-3 at halftime, the Hi-Tides outscored MAST 7-1 in the second half.

Izabella Perez had five goals, and Sofia George scored twice. Antonella Hemmerde, Chloe Gonzalez and Luna Balzano each added one goal.

In the semifinals, Miami Beach beat ATM 19-8, and in the quarterfin­als the Hi-Tides beat Coral Gables 13-6. Perez totaled 15 goals in the tournament.

The champs are Izabella Perez senior captain, center defender; Antonella Hemmerde senior captain, driver; Sofia George junior center; Liesel Alfonso senior driver; Priscilla Lamery junior driver;

Luna Balzano sophomore utility; Christina HopeBorges sophomore driver; Chloe Gonzalez senior driver; Elizabeth Matz sophomore goalie.

Miami Beach water polo coach Charles Pilamunga said: “I’m very proud of the resilience shown by the girls’ team. The

GMAC final was our eighth game in five days. We played in another tournament where we faced Dade and Broward teams and ended up with three wins and two loses.”

The district tournament is upcoming.

Pilamunga added: “I feel our chances in the district tournament are very good. Playing against quality opponents will always make us a better team.”

GIBBONS’ FLACK, YOUNG WIN AWARDS

Senior Maddie Young and Coach Margo Flack of the Class 4A state champion Cardinal Gibbons girls’ soccer team were named the 2021 Class 4A Girls’ Soccer Player of the Year and 4A Girls’ Soccer Coach of the Year, respective­ly, by the Florida Dairy Farmers.

They were selected by a statewide panel of high school girls’ soccer coaches and prep media representa­tives, and they arenow finalists for the overall 2021 Florida Dairy Farmers Miss Soccer award and Florida Girls’ Soccer Coach of the Year honor. That will be determined following another round of balloting by coaches and media.

Cypress Bay coach Katie Dwyer and Stoneman Douglas coach Laura Rountree were second and third, respective­ly, in the Class 7A voting. Coach Ramiro Vengoechea of Lourdes was third in the 6A voting, and coach Mike Sica of Archbishop McCarthy was second in 5A.

On the players’ side, Olivia Borroto of Lourdes was third in the 6A Player of the Year voting, andKimberl­y Cover of Archbishop McCarthy was the 5A runner-up.
