TALK ABOUT GUNS BIT OF PERSUASION

-

The Second Amendment, like the First Amendment, is not sacrosanct or inviolable. I hope common sense will prevail.

NO COMPARISON

Re the March 25 letters “Pay it forward” and “History lesson:” In comparing the unaccompanied Cuban children sent to the United States during Operation Pedro Pan to the unaccompanied children arriving at our borders today, no one mentions the huge difference between these two groups.

The Cuban children arrived legally, holding visas or visa waivers. The children arriving at our borders now are entering illegally.

While I feel a great deal of compassion for these children and the situations that brought them to our borders, the comparison is not accurate.

I’ve heard teachers lament about some students that, “You can tell them the answer but you can’t make them understand.”

This saying comes to mind when Sen. Joe Manchin, of West Virginia, says the filibuster needs to be left in place, even though voting rights, gun control and immigration legislation — of which most Americans approve — will never pass the Senate as long as there is a filibuster.

Maybe it’s time for President Biden to take Manchin to the woodshed and help him understand.

There are two Coast Guard bases in West Virginia. They seem superfluous at best, but I wonder how Manchin would feel knowing he’d be responsible for a decision by the commander-in-chief to close or relocate the bases out of state?
