Palmetto tennis wins GMAC titles

The Palmetto boys’ and girls’ tennis teams won GMAC titles. The unbeaten boys’ team (12-0) won its fourth consecutiv­e GMAC title. The unbeaten girls’ team (11-0) won the GMAC title for the fifth consecutiv­e time.

The Tigers boys defeated Killian 4-0 in the semifinals and beat Miami Beach 5-0 in the finals.

In the finals. No.1 Francisco Montana d. Roberto Campoverde 6-3, 6-3;

No.2 Sebastian Munoz d. Santiago Sosa 7-6 (7-3), 6-3; No.3 Alessandro Munoz d. Lazaro Martin 4-6, 6-4, 10-7; No.4 Adriano Guarino d. Martin Beltran 1-6, 7-5, 11-9; No.5 Alessio Guarino d. Jorge Maggiolo 6-1, 6-3.

“The finals against Miami Beach was tough on Thursday in the heat,” Palmetto coach Kelly Gibson said. “It began with my freshman Alessio Guarino being the first to win his match, Then the leaders of the team No.1 Francisco Montana and No.2 Sebastian Munoz won theirs. But the excitement came when two of my players, Alessandro Munoz and Adriano Guarino, played 21⁄2 hours and won in third-set tiebreaker­s for us to win all the singles and not have to play out the doubles matches. It was such a great moment to see them come together in that tight situation and pull through as a team with the win.”

In the semifinals, No.1 Franciso Montana d. Gabriel Rosell 8-0; No.2 Sebastian Munoz d. Lucas Netto 8-0; No.3 Alessandro Munoz d. Gabriel Galicia 8-0; No.4 Adriano Guarino d. Cristian Jimenez 8-0; No.5 Alessio Guarino d. Manuel Murga 8-0.

Sophomore Franciso Montana is 9-0. Junior Sebastian Munoz is 10-0. Sophomore Alessandro Munoz is 9-0. Junior Adriano Guarino is 10-0. Freshman Alessio Guarino is 3-0. He played at No.5 because a startercom­mitted to being a ball boy at the Miami Open.

The Tigers girls defeated Reagan 4-0 in the semifinals and beat TERRA 4-1 in the finals.

Senior Nathalie Vander Reis is 11-0. Junior Jett Coetzee is 8-1. Freshman Mia Sorrentino is 8-1. Freshman Brooke Revulta is 9-0. Junior Carly Stokes is 3-0. Freshman alternate Nicole Calmet is undefeated as well.

Gibson said: “The girls had it a little easier in beating Reagan, not even dropping a set, and then TERRA only losing one match. My senior Nathalie Vander Reis, who has already committed to play at [NCAA Division III] Middlebury College [in Vermont], led the team against Reagan. Nathalie has never lost a singles match in high school at Palmetto. She even won a state championsh­ip as a freshman. She is looking to capture a state title this year as a senior.”

The boys’ team is gearing for a run at its third consecutiv­e state title. The girls won state in 2018 and fell short in 2019 by two points in the region finals to Krop, who won the state championsh­ip. This young, talented team is ready to compete for another state title.

BOYS’ SOCCER HONORS

Doral Academy Coach Pamela McDonald and Belen Jesuit Coach Tanger Mendonca were named Florida Dairy Farmers Boys’ Soccer Coach of the Year in Class 6A and Class 5A, respective­ly.

They were selected by a statewide panel of high school boys’ soccer coaches and prep media representa­tives, and they arenow finalists for the overall 2021 Florida Dairy Farmers Boys’ Soccer Coach of the Year honor. That will be determined following another round of balloting by coaches and media.

Pamela McDonald, Doral Academy, Class 6A Coach of the Year: In her 13 th year as the Doral boys’ soccer coach, McDonald led her squad to an 11-1-3 record and the school’s first state championsh­ip. Her 2017 squad was the state runner-up, and this year’s state title was the first for a woman coaching a boys’ team in the 44-year history of the FHSAA state playoffs.

Tanger Mendonca, Belen Jesuit, Class 5A Coach of the Year: In his 14th year as a head coach, Mendonca posted an 183-1 record and won the Class 5A state championsh­ip. He has an overall career record of 226-6225, which includes another state title in 2016.

Westminste­r Christian Coach Josh Kirk was runner-up in the Class 3A voting, and Gulliver Prep Coach Neil Berment finished third in Class 4A.

DISTRICT CHAMPS

Gulliver Prep won district titles in girls’ water polo and boys’ water polo.
