Cardinal Gibbons’ Young named Miss Soccer
Cardinal Gibbons senior defender Maddie Young was selected as the Florida Dairy Farmers 2021 Miss Soccer and her coach, Margo Flack, was runner-up for Coach of the Year honors, following a final round of voting by a statewide panel of girls’ high school soccer coaches and media representatives.
Young helped lead the Chiefs to a 12-2-1 record and the program’s first Class 4A state championship by anchoring one of the state’s top defensive units, which allowed only nine goals and posted seven shutouts in 15 games. Young has signed to play college soccer at the University of Florida.
“I think it’s so well deserved that Maddie won,” Flack said. “She was such a strong player on the field, the best player on the field in every game we played.
“Seeing a defender win this award tells you what a presence she had on the field and what an impact she made against her opponents. Maddie was someone her teammates relied on. She made her teammates better players and made our team better.
“And she did it all with a smile on her face the entire time.”
Young, who was earlier named the Class 4A Player of the Year, had seven first-place votes and tallied 122 points to finish ahead of Class 5A POY Ava Rice of Lecanto (112) and Class 6A POY Kiki Slattery of Venice (86) in the voting. Class 3A POY Kate Carnes of Lakeland Christian (69) finished fourth followed by Class 7A POY Quinn Ryan of Plant (44) and Class 1A
POY Jasmine Perez-Acosta of Canterbury (17).
Young is the sixth player from Broward County to win this prestigious honor in the award’s 29year history.
Dave Silverberg, who guided Ponte Vedra High School to a 14-3-5 record and the Class 5A state championship, was named the Florida Dairy Farmers Girls’ Soccer Coach of the Year. It was the third state title for Silverberg in 13 years at Ponte Vedra. He also won four state titles during his seven-year tenure at Nease.
Silverberg, who was previously selected as the Class 5A Coach of the Year, finished with 113 points (eight first place votes) in winning this year’s award. Placing second was Class 4A COY Margo Flack, who amassed 102 points (five first place votes) and guided Cardinal Gibbons to that state title for the first time after runner-up finishes the previous two years.
Class 2A COY Mike Pickett of St. Johns Country Day (61) finished third in the voting followed by Class 7A COY Jen Rodriguez of Bartram Trail
(48), Class 6A COY Gary Bolyard of Venice (37) and Class 3A COY Jason Streets of Lakeland Christian (35).
This program exemplifies Florida Dairy Farmers’ commitment to the state’s youth.
