Columbus boys’ golf is 3rd at Brophy

The Columbus boys’ golf team was third of 20 teams from nine states at the recent Brophy Rodeo (National High School

Golf Invitation­al), presented by Ping in Arizona.

Dallas Trinity Christian finished first, and host Brophy Prep was second in the two-day competitio­n.

On Day One, Columbus led the event at 282, thanks to Max Fonseca, who broke 30 on the front nine, shooting a 29, which is very rare in high school golf. He completed the round with a 6-under par (66).

Andres Atrio had an amazing round as well with a 3-under (69).

Brophy Prep (284) and Lone Peak (284) followed in second with Trinity Christian (287) holding third.

On Day Two, the Explorers were led by Hans Risvaer, who shot a 4under (68), and Sebastian Kawas, who posted a 2under (70).

Columbus’s team total for the two-day tournament was 6-under (570).

Trinity Christian and Brophy Prep each scored one shot better at 569 with Trinity Christian winning in a tiebreaker.

Columbus took third with a tiebreaker over (Utah) Lone Peak.

Risvaer was fifth at 141.

Atrio and Fonseca were 11th at 143. Kawas was 16th at 144. Christian Figueredo shot 147, and Victor Herrera scored 154.

The day before the prestigiou­s tournament, Columbus won the skills competitio­n.

CROSS-COUNTRY

The Belen Jesuit High School boys’ cross-country team won its third consecutiv­e meet on Saturday at the Horse Park Invite in Ocala.

The Wolverines were led by senior Adam Magoulas, who was the 5K individual champion in a course record 15 minutes and 29 seconds. Sophomore Joshua Ruiz ran a 16:16 to finish 10th. Senior Julian Rodriguez was 19th at 16:31.6, and sophomore Evan Torres was 21st at 16:31.8. Freshman Joey Diaz-Quintero was 25th at 16:38.

Belen scored 72 points to place first of 49 teams. Satellite followed with 98 points. Braddock was 10th with 364 points, and Pine Crest was 17th with 586 points.

Senior Gabriel Garcia of Braddock was 22nd at 16:32. His sophomore teammates, Michael Gongora and Andres Canas, were 67th and 68th, respective­ly, in 17:25.3 and 17:25.5. Pine Crest junior Jack Gabriel was 72nd in 17:29.

Belen returns to Miami for Friday's King of the Hill Invitation­al at Tropical Park.

VOLLEYBALL

Carrollton d. Coral Shores 25-13, 26-24, 25-20: S.Ibarra 19 kills, 4 aces; D.Medina 4 aces, 6 digs; K.Althage 26 assists, 1 ace.

Divine Savior Academy d. (Plantation) American Heritage 2513, 25-15, 25-8: Isabella Mendoza 16 kills, 16 digs; Maite Alberdi 7 kills, 9 digs; Isabel Macia 36 set assists, 8 digs, 15 service points; Belyssa Cruz 10 digs, 5 aces; 16 service points; Saskia Habibe 6 kills.

Doral Academy d. St. Brendan 25-22, 17-25, 21-25, 26-24, 16-14: St. Brendan played well in an exciting, close match, dropping the final two sets 26-24 and 16-14. Leading the Sabres were Annelise Alvarez 14 kills; Bella López-Viega 11 kills; Jordan Medina 6 kills; setter Allison Ibarríaz 34 assists, 5 aces.

Hialeah Gardens d. Dr. Krop 25-20, 25-16, 23-19: Player of the Match Caitlyn Ray 25 assists, 4 aces, 3 kills; Senior captain Sabrina Cabrera 27 kills, 8 aces; Cristina Gonzalez 25 digs, 2 aces. HG 5-0.

La Salle d. Archbishop Carroll 25-16, 25-23, 21-25, 25-11: Top Player Christina Blanco 8 aces, 6 kills, 14 digs.

Palmetto d. Killian 25-16, 25-10, 25-12: Hailey Zambrana 14 kills, 4 digs, 2 aces, 2 blocks; Gabrielle Schwartz 6 kills, 12 digs; Elsa Baumer 7 kills, 3 aces.

True North Academy d. Westwood Christian in 4 sets, SLAM in 3 sets, AIE Charter in 3 sets: The Titans (3-0) were led by 8th grade setter Bianca Gomez and outside hitters Samantha Rodriguez and Sofia Pardo. Rodriguez is a freshman, and Pardo is the lone junior starter.

The Ferguson boys and girls teams are off to a good start with 7-0 wins over Gulliver Prep and Cutler Bay 7-0.
