Riviera’s Ragan starring in golf, volleyball

- From Miami Herald Staff Reports

Alexandra Ragan of Riviera Prep will be very busy on Tuesday, competing in a doubleheader of postseason sports.

During the day, the junior will tee it up for regional golf at Crandon Golf in Key Biscayne. At night, it’s back to the volleyball court, traveling to Westminster Christian for the region semifinals.

Ragan qualified for regionals in 1A girls’ golf by placing at the district tournament Oct. 25 at Biltmore Golf Course in Coral Gables.

It wasn’t easy.

Ragan parred the last two holes to force a threeway playoff for the final two regional spots. She then sank a 25-foot putt on the playoff hole (Hole 18) to clinch a regional berth, her fifth consecutive regional.

On Oct. 26, she helped the volleyball team win a 3A region quarterfinal match against Coral Shores. She is the starting setter and outside hitter.

That sets up a rematch with Westminster Christian,

which beat them in a 3A district final. In district volleyball, the champs and runners-up advance to regionals. Her Bulldogs team reached state in two of the past three seasons.

Ragan, 16, of Coral Gables, has played varsity volleyball since 8th grade and varsity golf since 6th grade, including playing boys’ varsity golf from 6th-9th grade. She also plays beach volleyball.

A member of the National Honor Society, Ragan carries a 4.95

GPA. Her grandfather, David William Ragan Jr., was a member of the winning 1963 U.S. Ryder Cup golf team, where he went 2-1-1.

In district golf, top three teams and top three individuals not on those teams qualify for regionals.
