S. Florida sends multiple teams to state golf

American Heritage, Columbus, Pine Crest and St. Thomas Aquinas were big winners in region golf, qualifying for state as region team champions.

Archbishop McCarthy, Belen Jesuit, Cardinal Gibbons, Doral Academy, Stoneman Douglas, Ransom Everglades, Westlake Prep and some local individual golfers also reached state.

2A REGION

The American HeritagePl­antation boys’ and girls’ golf teams swept a 2A region tournament, advancing to state.

The individual region champions from the event also hail from American Heritage.

Patriots’ senior Luke Clanton was first of 72 players in the boys’ competitio­n with 1-under-par 71 for his fourth consecutiv­e regional medalist honor at Miccosukee Golf & Country Club on the Dolphin/Barracuda courses (par 72) in Miami.

Clanton, a senior, parred the first hole of a playoff to best Rohan James of Riviera Beach Suncoast. Each shot 71 to force the extra hole.

That helped Heritage win its 11th consecutiv­e region golf championsh­ip with a score of 305. Clanton (1st, 71); Sohan Patel (5th, 75); Aiden Arce (T12th, 79): Sebastian Sacristan (T16th, 80); Gabriel Hegerstrom (T18th, 81).

In girls’ competitio­n, Kelly Shanahan of American Heritage was the medalist, placing first with 69 at Grand Palms Spa & Golf Resort in Pembroke Pines.

The Patriots won the region team title with 314. Shanahan (1st, 69); Katherine Schaefer (T3rd, 74): Laura Monslave (T16th, 84); Alessandra Tobora (T19th, 87); Emma Parker (T29th, 94).

The top three teams and top three individual­s not on those teams advanced to state. There will also be some at-large bids.

The Belen Jesuit boys’ golf team placed third at that 2A regional to earn its third consecutiv­e trip to state, a school golf record.

Freshman Lorenzo Rodríguez led the Wolverines with even-par 72 for third overall, one shot behind region champ Clanton and runner-up James.

Junior Adrian Rodríguez birdied on back-to-back holes down the stretch to give the Wolverines the edge they needed to qualify.

The FHSAA Golf 2A

State Championsh­ip is Nov. 12-13 at Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howeyin-the-Hills.

3A REGION

The Columbus boys’ golf team won the team championsh­ip, and Alex Heard of Boca Raton won the individual title during a 3A region tournament at Osprey Point Golf Course (par 72) in Boca Raton.

The Explorers were led by Hans Risvaer (T2nd, 70), Andres Atrio (T5th, 71), Max Fonseca (8th, 72) and Christian Figueredo (T9th, 73).

After winning the district title, St. Thomas Aquinas won the girls’ region championsh­ip with 307 at Southwinds Golf Course in Boca Raton.

Raiders’ senior Erin Marcelino shot 70 to place first as the region champ. For Marcelino, it marks her second consecutiv­e region title and fourth trip to state. Teammate Lily Celentano was 11th at region with 76, followed by Morgan Herring (78), Nicole Castro (83) and Isabel van den Berg (86).

The Pine Crest boys’ golf team won the team title, and Gulliver Prep senior John Marshall captured medalist honors during a 1A region tournament at PGA National Estate Golf Course (par

72) in Palm Beach Gardens.

Florida Christian’s Nicholas Prieto carded an even-par 72 to tie for third. In a playoff, Prieto scored a birdie on the first hole against Jack Thomas of King’s Academy to clinch the final spot to state, prior to the at-large bids.

The FHSAA Golf 1A State Championsh­ip is Nov. 9-10 at Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howeyin-the-Hills.

DISTRICT CROSS-COUNTRY

The Belen Jesuit boys’ cross-country team won its 18th consecutiv­e district championsh­ip at Larry & Penny Thompson Park in Miami.

The win marks the 40th district title for Belen Jesuit in school history. The Class 3A Wolverines scored 19 points to best a field of 11 teams.

Belen Jesuit sophomore Joshua Ruiz finished first on the 5K course in 16 minutes 28 seconds.

The Wolverines will run Saturday at South Fork High School in Stuart for the region championsh­ip.

REGION VOLLEYBALL

In a 7A region semifinal, Doral Academy defeated Hialeah Gardens 25-16, 25-19, 25-15 to advance to the region championsh­ip for the first time in program history.

This was a rematch of the district finals that Doral also won.

Sophia Torres (11 kills, 4 aces), Izabella Molina (9 kills, 3 blocks), Ariel Simmons (7 kills, 3 blocks) and Melissa Gonzalez (18 assists, 5 digs, 2 aces) led the Firebirds.

Doral (20-8) will face visiting South Plantation on Saturday for the region title and a trip to the state final four. The Paladins (22-2) beat Southwest 25-17, 25-18, 25-21 in a region semifinal.

In a 3A region semifinal, Westminste­r Christian defeated Riviera Prep 25-18, 25-15, 25-11.

The Warriors (24-5) are ranked No. 9 nationally by MaxPreps. They will battle Divine Savior (24-5) on Saturday for a 3A region championsh­ip and a spot in the state semifinals.

Divine Savior beat Ransom Everglades 25-17, 25-7, 25-21 in a region semifinal.

FOOTBALL

SOCCER

At the Soccer Locker/ Miami Country Day Soccer Classic in Miami Shores, host Miami Country Day defeated Miami Jackson 4-1.

Victor Destri, Ian Sauer, Stefano Dumas, and Renan Custodio scored for the Spartans. Ian Sauer and Custodio each had an assist.

Also at the soccer classic, Miami Beach tied Ransom Everglades 2-2. Arsenio DiDonna and Israel Rodriguez scored for Miami Beach, and Giancuca Calebrese added an assist. Ransom’s goals were scored by Dillion Kaye and Christian Sosa. Goals were assisted by Lucas Cavaro and Josh Hoppenstie­n.
