TERRA bowling team places well at State in Orlando

TERRA High School bowlers excelled at the FHSAA State Bowling Championsh­ips at Boardwalk Bowl Entertainm­ent Center in Orlando.

Boys’ Individual: TERRA senior Casey Puett was Miami Dade’s top finisher in singles, finishing 27th with a solid 845 series (four games). He also led the county in bowling average during the regular season (210 avg.).

Puett said via email: “It’s great to show the rest of Florida that Miami Dade bowlers can compete with the best.”

Other notable Dade bowlers: Marlon Ruiz (Columbus) 50th (805); Tyler Keller (City of Hialeah Educationa­l Academy Charter High School) 56th; Evan Viener (Palmetto) 57th (791); Chris

Ferrer (Columbus) 67th (782).

Boys’ Team: The top boys’ team from Miami Dade was Columbus in 21st place.

Belen 28th; Ferguson 29th; Southwest 30th.

In the girls’ division, Gillian Pons, also of TERRA, was the top Miami Dade finisher in 44th (706 series).

The TERRA girls’ team became the first girls’ team from Miami Dade in the past four years to reach the second round at State (Top 16 after morning qualifying).

In the afternoon Bakers Round matches, TERRA lost to top-ranked (Riverview) Bell Creek 3-1. TERRA then defeated eighthrank­ed Mandarin 3-2. Terra then lost to seventhran­ked Flagler Palm Coast 3-2.

The Wolves were led by Gillian Pons (44th, 706),

Ella Perez (61st, 650) and Alexa Puett (77th, 628).

The Ferguson girls’ team, led by Natalia Findeisen (79th, 624 series), placed 20th.

Dr. Krop 31st; Alonzo and Tracy Mourning School 33rd.

The TERRA girls’ team had the best girls’ season in Miami Dade County bowling in years. Undefeated in the regular season, TERRA won the Miami Dade Youth Fair Tournament, the GMAC Tournament and the district tournament. The team includes senior Gillian Pons, senior Ella Perez, senior Alexa Puett, junior Jezel Lopez, junior Jassidy Lopez and sophomore Alyssa Sosa.

Kudos to TERRA firstyear bowling coach Catherine Manfra and TERRA athletic director Deb Margolis for their efforts throughout the bowling season.

Of those representi­ng Broward, the Taravella boys’ team was 22nd, tops in the county, and Archbishop McCarthy was 25th.

Jason Marx from American Heritage placed 77th, and Masen Purcell of Stoneman Douglas was 98th.

In the girls’ division, South Plantation was

23rd, and Coral Springs Charter was 30th.

Alyssa Metellius of Nova placed 78th, and Alexandra Bishop of St. Thomas Aquinas finished 103rd.

GOLF

After a long two-day, three-round tournament at the Country Club of Winter Haven, golfer Nicholas Prieto of Miami won the FJT Tour Championsh­ip.

Coming back from two shots down on this cool windy day, Prieto shot 71-69-72 (212) to win by one stroke over Wyatt Plattner in the boys’ 16-18 division.

Prieto, who competes in the FHSAA State Golf Championsh­ips this week, is having a stellar year. While representi­ng Florida Christian School, he won the Miami Dade County Youth Fair Tournament and a district tournament. He was third at regionals to qualify for state.

SOCCER

At the Soccer Locker/ Miami Country Day Soccer Classic in Miami Shores, Ransom Everglades edged Miami Jackson 3-2. Nico Imery, Luca Falero and Nicky Goldberg scored for the Raiders.

In the second game, Miami Beach shut out host Miami Country Day 2-0. Gianluca Calabrese and Camilo Roldan scored, and goalkeeper Ethan Zaldivar made three saves en route to the shutout.

Girls: St. Brendan 1, Carrollton 0: Olivia Laracuente 1G; Sam Pro defense; Gkp Meagan Alvarez shutout.
