Florida COVID-19 cases, hospitaliz­ations and ICU patients continue to trend up

What is the COVID-19 situation like in Florida?

In a seven-day period, the state added 9,579 cases and 22 deaths per day, on average, according to Miami Herald calculatio­ns of data published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Over the past three weeks, on average, 236 more cases were logged each day in Florida, showing an increase in trends.

As of Wednesday, more than 14,460,000 people were fully vaccinated in Florida. The state has logged at least 6,169,670 cases and 74,557 deaths since March 2020.

The number of cases is likely an undercount due to positive results from athome COVID testing. The state also only tracks resident cases and deaths, excluding nonresiden­ts.

Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Monroe are at a high COVID risk level, according to the CDC. Under the medium risk level, the CDC recommends masks indoors, regardless of vaccinatio­n status.

In the period May 20-27, Florida saw 66,850 new cases, according to Miami Herald calculatio­ns of the CDC’s Community Profile Report published Tuesday.

Miami-Dade reported

18,136 new resident cases.

The county’s resident case total is 1,260,570.

Broward reported 8,133 ● new resident cases. The county’s resident case total is 638,501.

Palm Beach reported

4,723 new resident cases. The county’s resident case total stands at 390,341.

Monroe reported 162

● new resident cases. The county’s resident case total is 19,275.

Florida added 139 deaths in the past week, according to Herald calculatio­ns of the CDC’s Wednesday Community Profile Report. It is unclear when these newly reported deaths occurred.

Miami-Dade’s death

Palm Beach’s death

119; no new deaths were reported.

The number of people hospitaliz­ed with COVID has continued to increase. There were 2,694 people hospitaliz­ed, with 233 in ICUs, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services report on Tuesday. Over the past three weeks, on average, 52 more people were hospitaliz­ed each day in Florida.

About 14,462,011 eligible Floridians — 67.3% of the state’s population — have been fully vaccinated, according to the CDC. About 5,906,773 Floridians have received a booster, about 40.8% of the state’s fully vaccinated population.

In Dade, about 788,733 people, or 33.9% of the fully vaccinated population, have received a booster.

In Broward, about 559,412 (39.9%)
