So how versatile is North Broward Prep senior Christian Dohler?

It isn’t just that he excels in three sports; it’s how versatile he is within each sport.

In soccer, his first love when it comes to his athletic pursuits, Dohler is a prolific scoring forward who had 25 goals and found teammates for scoring opportunities seven more times this season.

When he was asked to try out as a kicker for the Eagles’ football team, he didn’t just start making field goals. Before long, Dohler learned how to play cornerback and became one of the better players in the county at the position.

And in track and field, Dohler doesn’t just use his speed in the 400 meters and relays; he also excels in the long jump and triple jump.

All that while maintaining a 4.79 GPA, scoring a 1310 on the SAT and becoming a member of multiple National Honor Societies which earned him a scholarship to Georgetown University.

It’s why Dohler is this year’s Miami Herald Boys’ Scholar-Athlete of the Year for Broward County.

“In high school for four years, I’ve put the student before the athlete,” Dohler said. “So knowing that all the work that I put into both school and sports has paid off is really exciting for me.”

When he’s not mentoring aspiring athletes himself or participating in community service projects repairing schools and homes in need, Dohler is continually keeping a high standard in any subject or sport to which he applies himself.

It started with Dohler playing soccer at age 3 at the local YMCA. Before he knew it, he was playing travel ball and visiting countries like Sweden,

Colombia, Portugal and Spain to play the sport he loves overseas.

Dohler, the captain of North Broward Prep’s boys’ soccer team the past three seasons, played in his first major youth tournaments in Sweden, his favorite stop along the way, such as the Gothia Cup — the world’s largest international youth soccer tournament.

“I’ve met a lot of really good people and a lot of close friends of mine I’ve met through soccer,” Dohler said.

“It’s just something that is always going to be close to my heart, no matter what I do in the future. Just to indulge in all the different cultures and be able to talk to people from different countries to see different perspectives on things. That’s what soccer does.”

Dohler, who is headed to play football and compete in track at Georgetown, is a three-time first team All-Broward selection in soccer and was also first team in track and field last season. Dohler also quickly learned how to play corner on the football team making him an effective player for the Eagles on defense as well as special teams.

In track, Dohler was able to win a district and regional title last year in the triple jump and placed third at state while also competing in the 200, 400 and both the 400-meter and 1,600-meter relays.

Dohler would have likely followed up his successes in track and field with more wins this season if not for an injury that sidelined him for a few weeks late in the spring.

“I have the ability to adapt to anything I put my mind to,” Dohler said. “It’s helped me become a leader not only on the field but off the field as well. And I think that those experiences have made me become the person I am.”
