Angels’ skid ties team mark at 13, Trout exits with injury

-

Swapping out their manager didn't change the Los Angeles Angels' fortunes Tuesday night.

The Halos matched a franchise record with their 13th straight defeat hours after firing manager Joe Maddon, falling 6-5 to the streaking Boston Red Sox on Christian Vázquez’s go-ahead single in the 10th inning.

Interim boss Phil Nevin lost his managerial debut and Angels star Mike Trout exited with left groin tightness as Los Angeles tied the franchise mark for its longest skid set from 1988-89. The Angels dropped the final 12 games on the 1988 schedule — their worst stretch in a single season before this one — and then their 1989 opener.

“I'm not worried about morale at all,” Nevin said. “You saw the effort from everyone. We had good at-bats. I thought there was a lot of great things. It was just a game where we ended up on the wrong side.”

Boston won its sixth straight with a 15-hit effort, including two from Vázquez. Bobby Dalbec had two RBI.

Trout homered in the first inning and gingerly ran out a double in the third before leaving with the groin issue. He said he felt a little sore but isn’t overly alarmed.

WEDNESDAY’S GAMES

Tigers 3, Pirates 1: Miguel Cabrera hit a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth and Detroit completed a two-game sweep at Pittsburgh.

Harold Castro led off the eighth with a single off Wil Crowe (2-3) and Jonathan Schoop followed with a bloop to shallow center. Cabrera then the decisive hit.

Royals 8, Blue Jays 4: Kansas City, mired in a 5-15 rut, found some offense to end a threegame losing streak.

MJ Melendez and Emmanuel Rivera drove in two runs apiece. Carlos Santana went 4 for 4 and reached base five times during his eighth career four-hit game.

LATE TUESDAY Yankees 10, Twins 4:

Anthony Rizzo hit a threerun homer in the seventh inning to crack open a close game as visiting New York won its seventh in a row.

Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton got the visitors going with firstinning homers, the 23rd time they’ve gone deep in the same game in five seasons together.

The Yankees (40-15) lead the major leagues with the best 55-game record in baseball since Seattle in 2001.

Padres 7, Mets 0: Yu Darvish held New York hitless until the sixth inning and Jurickson Profar launched a leadoff home run for host San Diego.

Darvish (5-3) allowed only two hits in seven innings while striking out six and walking none on 100 pitches. He hit three of the Mets’ first five batters with pitches, including Brandon Nimmo to open the game.

The Mets lost Pete Alonso when the slugger was plunked on his right hand leading off the second. Initial X-rays were negative and further tests were planned.
