New hotel on Deauville site will honor the past while creating new future for North Beach
Imagining a better and brighter future while respecting and honoring our past. That is the essence of my vision — along with the iconic architect Frank Gehry — for the site of the former Deauville Hotel.
I grew up in Miami Beach and graduated from Miami Beach Senior High School. I learned from my days watching my father manage what was the Martinique Hotel at 64th Street and Collins Avenue what it meant to our community to have a vibrant and energized North Beach.
When the Deauville closed and fell into deep disrepair in 2017, it became an unfortunate reminder of what it used to be. It was the place where the Beatles played and where John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan vacationed.
It is a relic of a bygone era, but it’s doing nothing for North Beach and its residents now.
We have an incredible opportunity, through the Deauville site, to reinvigorate North
Beach for the next generation and beyond. And we can do that while recognizing its special place in the history of Miami Beach.
Bringing a six-star, worldclass hotel to North Beach will be a game-changer.
When I spoke with Mayor
Dan Gelber and a number of elected leaders to share my vision for the property, the first thing I told them was that this project is personal to me. Miami Beach — and North Beach, in particular — is responsible for some of the greatest memories of my life.
I want the members of the next generation of North Beach to have the same opportunity I did and make their own memories.
More than just the sentimental, the economic impact of this project will pay dividends to North Beach for decades to come.
For years, the community and elected leaders have worked hard to bring renewed vitality and economic life to North Beach. The new hotel at the Deauville site will become the anchor that catalyzes the entire area — especially by bringing job opportunities.
As the owner of the Miami
Dolphins, we’ve always put the South Florida community first — engaging in any number of endeavors to strengthen the ties that bind us together while also creating incredible entertainment venues that have spurred our economy.
While this project is certainly different, the values that underpin our community work with the Dolphins are exactly the same here — community progress and a brighter future.
I anticipate that we will look back at this moment in Miami Beach’s history as the time we decided to take a leap toward uniting our community and bringing something truly visionary to a city I care about deeply.
This may be a long process, but I know the hard work will be worth it. I am deeply appreciative to the Miami Beach Planning Board for its near-unanimous recommendation to the City Commission on our vision of a transformational project.
I’m grateful for all that Miami Beach has done to shape my life and I’m personally committed to ensuring that we get this project right.
