Supreme Court lives in the past
Donald Trump’s Supreme Court continues to undermine what’s left of our imperfect democracy through its attacks on the Constitution. Most of our nation is being ruled by American Taliban, imposing their fundamentalist views on everyone. Some members of the court seem to be believe it is 1776 and are unwilling to acknowledge that our society and the world has evolved.
Our militia is the world’s most powerful and sophisticated. Firearms are no longer single-shot muskets; they are weapons of urban warfare and mass murder.
We reject slavery, acknowledge women’s suffrage and recognize the rights of all humans to be equal to those of the white men who wrote our Constitution. Trump’s court doesn’t. Ours is a nation where guns and gun manufacturers have more rights than people.
We are marching backward to a world ruled by tyrants and intimidation. Racists and bigots tell us what consenting adults cannot do in the privacy of their homes, what a doctor cannot do with the consent of her patient, under what conditions a woman is prohibited from interstate travel, what marital unions are allowed and which votes should not be counted; but there is nothing we can do to moderate gun violence.
These same extremists, who preach the right to life of the fertilized egg, shrug their shoulders and turn their backs on children unable to live a healthy life. They ignore the cry of a single mother who cannot care for her child. They turn a blind eye when dozens of children are massacred in a classroom or mass murders are perpetrated in communities of color, then callously send thoughts and prayers.
The Republican Party is the American Taliban. They must be voted out of power. – Sam Dobrow, Miami
