Inter Miami shut down in Toronto; UM sweeps Hokies

-

Inter Miami’s offense went cold in frigid Canada late Saturday night, falling to Toronto FC 2-0.

Toronto got goals from

Jonathan Osorio, who connected in the 48th minute, and a header by

Mark-Anthony Kaye in the 69th minute.

“This is the next stage of our development . ... We need to learn very fast, particularly in the MLS where away games are brutally tough, and you cannot make individual errors,” said head coach

Phil Neville.

Inter Miami had a few chances of its own, including two quick transition opportunities within the first 10 minutes. First,

Nicolás Stefanelli played a ball for Jean down the right wing, who then crossed to Rodolfo Pizarro on the left side of the box, but his shot was saved. Then,

Jean Mota made a run down the right wing and cut a pass back to Stefanelli, but his driven low shot heading for the far post drew a sprawling save by Toronto’s keeper.

Striker Josef Martínez opened the match wearing the captain’s armband for the first time as an Inter Miami player tonight in the absence of captain Gregore. Harvey Neville, meanwhile, made his first MLS start, making MLS history, as it marked the first time a father and son duo of coach and player faced another such pairing in an MLS match, with the Nevilles facing Bob and

Michael Bradley.

Inter Miami will return home to DRV PNK Stadium to face the Chicago Fire on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

UM SWEEPS VA. TECH

After the Hurricanes walked-off the Hokies in the ninth Friday evening, Miami mashed Saturday to sweep No. 17 Virginia Tech.

The Hurricanes hammered the Hokies, picking up a dominant 21-6 victory in the opening game of the doubleheader, before rallying for a 12-9 win in the nightcap at Mark Light Field.

“I’m proud of our players,” Miami head coach

Gino DiMare said. “A lot of guys did a lot of positive things today. Sweeping a doubleheader doesn’t happen very often. It’s extremely hard to do, but you’ve got to give a lot of credit to our hitters. We’ve got some guys cooking right now.”

In the first contest, the Hurricanes (14-6, 5-1 ACC) homered seven times, the fourth-most in a single game in program history.

Fifth-year senior Dario Gomez, juniors CJ Kayfus, Zach Levenson, Carlos Perez and Dominic Pitelli and sophomores

Dorian Gonzalez Jr. and

Gaby Gutierrez all left the yard, as Miami mounted a season-high 21 runs and 23 hits.

This is the full circle for us.’ Brad Keselowski finished second. Christopher Bell
