Michigan’s Howard declares for NBA Draft

Michigan freshman guard Jett Howard announced Thursday that he is entering the NBA Draft.

The son of coach Juwan Howard averaged 14.2 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 29 games this season. He was a third-team All-Big Ten selection.

“Being a Wolverine has been the honor of a lifetime,” Howard said in his announceme­nt on Twitter. “I apologize for not getting the job done this year with my brothers, but best believe we tried.

“... My dreams aren’t possible without the support of my friends and family. After deep thought and careful considerat­ion, I will be declaring for the 2023 NBA Draft.”

Howard also singled out his father, the former Fab Five star at Michigan who enjoyed a long NBA career before becoming a coach.

NOVA ADVANCES TO DIVISION II TITLE GAME

The Sharks are one win away.

Kobe Rodgers scored 21 points to lead Nova Southeaste­rn University’s men’s basketball team to a 94-87 win over Cal State Bernadino on Thursday at Evansville, Indiana.

The Sharks, who are 35-0 and ranked No. 1 in the nation in NCAA Division II, will try for the first national championsh­ip in program history on Saturday afternoon. Their opponent was to be determined later Thursday. — WALTER VILLA

Providence: Kim English

● was named the 16th head coach of Friars basketball.

The school did not announce terms of the deal; however, ESPN reported that it’s a six-year contract.

“Kim English is the ideal choice to lead our men’s basketball program, and I am delighted to welcome him to the Providence College community,” said Father Kenneth R. Sicard, the school’s president.

“He is a proven leader with an impressive record of commitment to the holistic developmen­t of student-athletes in programs that reflect his work ethic, integrity and passion for excellence. Those characteri­stics reflect the ideals of Providence College, and I am excited for the future of Friar men’s basketball under Kim’s leadership.”

English replaces Ed Cooley, who became the new Georgetown coach earlier this week. Providence zeroed in on English almost immediatel­y, according to ESPN.

Kansas: Backup guard

Joseph Yesufu entered the transfer portal, becoming the fourth Jayhawk to do so this week.

Yesufu averaged 4.1 points and made 24 3pointers in 35 games (three starts) this season. He averaged 12.7 minutes per game.

The other Kansas players entering the portal are guard Bobby Pettiford and forwards Zach Clemence and Cameron Martin.

Oral Roberts: Oral

Roberts wasted no time finding its new head coach, promoting assistant coach

Russell Springmann to the top job to replace Paul Mills.

Mills officially was named head coach at Wichita State on Wednesday, and Oral Roberts promoted Springmann hours later.

Springmann joined Mills’ staff at Oral Roberts in

May 2018. He previously spent 17 years as an assistant to Rick Barnes at Texas.
