Divine Senior golfer Vanososte captures Maverick Invitation­al

Senior Daniel Vanososte of the Divine Savior boys’ golf team shot a 1-underpar 34 to win the Maverick Invitation­al, hosted by Archbishop McCarthy at the Grand Palms Spa & Golf Resort in Pembroke Pines.

Senior teammate Ignacio Asin fired 1-over 36 to place third as both helped the Sharks finish second in the team standings, behind St. Thomas Aquinas.

Divine Savior seniors Johann Straetger, Michael Mata and Santiago Espinosa added greatly to that runner-up team scoring for coach Alvaro Puche.

The Columbus boys’ golf team placed sixth of 29 teams at 594 at the Windermere vs. The

World Golf Tournament at The Legends at Orange Lake Resort Golf Course in Kissimmee.

The Explorers, who were fifth of 3A schools, fired their lowest 18-hole round of the season at 293 on Day 2.

Columbus freshman phenom Hector Perez Sainz shot 72-73 (1-over 145) to place 16th of 169 golfers, and junior teammate Victor Herrera had a 1-under 71 on day two to place 26th overall. Junior Carl Tegel from Sweden, who has only played golf for two years, shot a stellar 2-over 74, and sophomore Nico Sanchez shot a 75.

Columbus competes at the QDOBA TOC (Tournament of Champions) on Friday and Saturday in Orlando.

CROSS-COUNTRY

The Belen Jesuit boys’ cross-country 2023 season continues to be historic and record-breaking.

The Wolverines won their sixth consecutiv­e FSU Prestate Invitation­al Elite Boys’ Division championsh­ip at Tallahasse­e’s Apalachee Regional Park.

The event, a 5K (3.1 miles), featured 32 teams, including the best teams in Florida (across all four classes).

Belen scored 38 points. Brother Martin of Louisiana was runner-up with 124 points.

The Wolverines were again led by senior Joshua Ruiz who ran 14 minutes 59.6 seconds to finish second of 299 runners. Senior Patrick Koon of Leon (Tallahasse­e) was nine seconds faster at 14:50.4.

Belen’s Marcelo Mantecon was a close fourth in 15:10.2. Twins Justin (15:33.60) and Joseph Ruiz (15:34.70) were the third and fourth finishers for Belen, respective­ly, placing in the top 10, too. Rounding the top 5 for Belen was Evan Torres, a recent University of Miami commit. He was 21st overall at 15:53.60.

More locals doing well at the prestigiou­s event included Ransom Everglades senior David Serra, who was sixth overall in 15:17.80. Columbus senior Alejandro Romagosa was 14th in 15:40.30, and Jonathan Pena, a junior at Westminste­r Academy, was 18th at 15:51.20.

Also, senior Mario Sueiras of Columbus was 44th in 16:14.30, and junior Luis Marti of Coral Reef was 55th in 16:20. Pembroke Pines Charter junior Alejandro De Bastos was 59th in 16:22.30, and

Braddock senior Michael Gongora was 61st in 16:23.40.

Belen travels to Cary, North Carolina, to face some of the best teams in the Southeast on Saturday at the Great American Cross-Country Festival. Belen maintains its No. 4 national ranking by Dyestat and Milesplit along with its No. 1 Florida ranking by Flrunners.com.

Ashley Fitzgerald of American Heritage (Plantation) was runner-up of 279 runners in the Elite Girls’ Division of the FSU Prestate Invitation­al at Tallahasse­e’s Apalachee Regional Park.

She covered the 3.1-mile course in 17 minutes 40 seconds. Braddock senior Annabella Cardona was 27th in 19:15.20, and Lourdes junior Olivia Rodriguez was 55th in 19:51.10, and sophomore teammate Daniella Fraga was 68th in 20:04.1. Lourdes freshman Alessandra

Perez was very close behind in 70th at 20:05.8.

Lourdes placed eighth of 30 teams. Braddock was 24th.
