Catcher Ivan Herrera hit a go-ahead home run in the seventh inning to lead Panama to a 5-4 win over Curacao in the third-place game of the Caribbean Series on Friday at Miami’s loanDepot park.

Herrera, who made his MLB debut last season with the St. Louis Cardinals, ambushed a firstpitch cutter over the heart of the plate from Curacao’s Cody Mincey and sent it 384 feet to left field to give Panama the lead for good.

With just the championship game between the Dominican Republic and Venezuela left to play Friday night, Herrera leads the tournament with three home runs and 10 RBI.

The home run completed Panama’s comeback to take third place in the seven-team tournament.

Panama fell behind 4-1 after three innings before chipping away at its deficit. Panama got within one run of Curacao with a two-run fourth inning on a Ricardo Cespedes RBI groundout and Joshwan Wright RBI single. Wright then tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the sixth before Herrera hit his home run.

Johan Camargo scored two runs for Panama.

After both teams swapped runs in the second inning, Curacao built its initial lead with a threerun third inning capped by Jonathan Schoop’s 363foot home run against Panama starting pitcher Heitor Tokar that clanked off the left-field foul pole.

Panama’s bullpen settling things down from there. Samuel Burgos tossed 4 2⁄3 shutout innings while Panama’s offense rallied and then Ronald Ramirez followed with two-thirds of a scoreless inning of his own to get Panama through the eighth. Severino Gonzalez capped the game with a shutout ninth for the save.
