1 dead in shooting near end of Chiefs’ parade; UM names RB coach

One person was killed and at least 10 people were injured Wednesday when gun shots were fired at the conclusion of the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade and celebratio­n, according to multiple reports.

There was no official word from the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department, which said that shots were fired and that “multiple people were struck.”

Three people were taken into custody, per the media report. Police said “more investigat­ion” was underway.

The shooting occurred near a parking garage west of Union Station, where a large crowd had gathered as players and team personnel took the stage to celebrate with fans mostly clad in Chiefs red.

Videos posted to X, formerly Twitter, show Chiefs fans running away from Union Station after the ceremony had ended.

Steve Spagnuolo signed a contract extension, the team announced on Wednesday. Terms of the deal were not announced for Spagnuolo, 64, who joined the team as a defensive coordinato­r in 2019.

UM NAMES RB COACH

University of Miami head football coach Mario Cristobal announced the hiring of Matt Merritt as the Hurricanes’ running backs coach on Wednesday.

Merritt, who arrives in Coral Gables with more than a decade of collegiate experience coaching running backs, has been a key member of multiple coaching staffs that have either played for or won a national championsh­ip.

In his most recent stop at USF in 2023, he helped the Bulls produce 12 team and 16 individual records as the team capped the biggest turnaround in Bulls history (a six-win improvemen­t) with a 45-0 rout of Syracuse in the Boca Raton Bowl.

He previously worked as a member of the University of Tennessee staff in 2021 and has been a part of coaching staffs that have played for (JMU, 2019) and won (Ohio State, 2015) a national championsh­ip.

MLB: Veteran broadcaste­r Jenny Cavnar was named the lead play-byplay announcer for the Oakland Athletics, making her the first woman in MLB history to be a team’s primary voice. Cavnar spent the past 12 seasons covering the Colorado Rockies in roles including backup play-by-play announcer.
