Miami Northwestern is the standard in girls’ track and field statewide and one of the best programs in the country.

The Bulls have won 14 consecutive state titles entering this season.

Dillard would like to begin to build such a dynasty this year, however.

The Panthers got off to a good start by matching Northwestern’s point total on Saturday at Traz Powell Stadium and splitting the championship of the Louie Bing Invitational.

The two squads each scored 92 points.

Meanwhile, boys’ powerhouse Columbus cruised to a team title of its own with 121.5 points to finish comfortably ahead of runner-up Northwestern’s 62 points.

The Bulls’ girls finished with one individual champion when Tyra

Cox took home the championship of the 200 meter dash in 24.08 seconds. Northwestern won a pair of relays as it won the 400 and 800 meter relays.

Dillard posted a pair of champions with Raquel Edwards won the 800 meters and Christiana Coleman took home the 1,600 meter invitational title. Dillard also won the 3,200 meter relay.

Shaddai Carter led the Explorers on the boys’ side by winning the long jump and triple jump championships. Amani Marti also won the pole vault to give Columbus three individual champs at the meet.

Other multiple event winners included American Heritage’s Christien Moreau, who won the shot put and discus.

Somerset Academy’s girls had two multiple event winners as well. Aleesa Samuel won the 100 meter dash and the 100 meter hurdles. Lauren Kirby won the shot put and discus titles.
