Scheffler builds momentum with five-stroke win at Bay Hill

- From Miami Herald Wire Services — ORLANDO SENTINEL

Scottie Scheffler’s Sunday stroll at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando ended a nearly year-long drought and secured his spot atop the world rankings.

His five-shot victory also turned an event known for final-round fireworks into a dud.

A closing 6-under-par 66 was the day’s low score and the only bogey-free round.

Scheffler, 27, now rides a wave of momentum into this week’s Players Championship, the PGA Tour’s showcase event and site of Scheffler’s last official win.

He ended the week at Bay Hill 15-under par for 273. Reigning U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark finished second. Shane Lowry, the coleader after each of the first three rounds, righted the ship after a bogeybogey start Sunday to card a par 72 and finish third, a stroke behind Clark.

LIV in the Far East: Abraham Ancer, who blew up to a 72 in the third and final round, birdied the first playoff hole to win the inaugural LIV Golf tournament Sunday in Hong Kong.

He and Cameron Smith and Paul Casey had finished the three rounds at 197, but the latter two bogeyed the first playoff hole.

Ancer started the day with a five-stroke lead

Casey’s 6-under 64 final round led his Crushers GC to the team title.
