How did baseball teams from McArthur and Canterbury high schools spend part of their Spring Break?

Getting together for some friendly competition at McArthur’s baseball field in Hollywood in the morning and then heading to Loan Depot Park in Miami in the afternoon to watch the Miami Marlins home opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

McArthur’s baseball coach Oddibe McDowell and Canterbury’s coach Frank Turco have South Florida and pro baseball ties.

McDowell played baseball for McArthur and made it to the major league level with the Texas Rangers. Turco played baseball for Cooper City High School and Barry University in Miami

Shores and reached Double-A status with the Texas Rangers organization.

Coach Charlie Cardinale, who is an assistant coach for McDowell at McArthur along with Clint Tommie, coached at Cooper City, after Turco graduated.

McArthur is scheduled to play a game at Loan Depot Park against Chaminade-Madonna. To do that, McArthur and Chaminade were required to sell 200 tickets to the Miami Marlins Opening Day game on March 28, the date of McArthur’s baseball game with Canterbury, which is based across Alligator Alley in Fort Myers.

That date was selected because Canterbury asked to buy Marlins Opening Day tickets from McArthur; so the coaches decided to have a morning game, and then both teams attended the Marlins game in the afternoon. Canterbury purchased 70 tickets for the coaches and players and their parents.

Because of the friendly vibe between the two teams, the parents of the players on McArthur cooked burgers and hot dogs for both teams before trekking to Loan Depot Park.

McArthur won its game 10-6 in the morning. The Marlins lost their game to the Pirates 6-5 in 12 innings in the afternoon.
