Rangers put away Tigers in high-scoring affair
Jonah Heim hit a two-run home run, Marcus Semien and Adolis Garcia delivered solo shots and the visiting Texas Rangers topped the Detroit Tigers 9-7 on Thursday afternoon.
Semien had three hits and scored twice for Texas, which won the series 3-1. The teams combined for 24 hits, 13 by the Rangers.
Texas starter Jack Leiter, the No. 2 pick of the 2021 draft, allowed seven runs in 3 2⁄3 innings in his major league debut. Jose Leclerc (1-2) picked up the win in relief and Kirby Yates notched his second save.
With the game tied 7-7 in the eighth, Leody Taveras hit a one-out double, reached third in a botched rundown and scored the go-ahead run on a fielder’s choice. Taveras added an
RBI single in the ninth.
Rangers manager Bruce Bochy was ejected in the eighth for arguing a call.
Rays 2, Angels 1: Hothitting Amed Rosario went 2 for 4 with a triple, Ryan Pepiot fired six strong innings and host Tampa Bay split its four-game series against Los Angeles.
Batting third in the lineup, Rosario produced his big hit in the first inning, tripling in a run and then scoring on a sacrifice fly. The offseason acquisition increased his hitting streak to 10 games and boosted his average to .339.
Yandy Diaz was 2 for 4 and Richie Palacios singled and scored as the Rays had just five hits.
Pepiot (2-2) yielded just one run on three hits and three walks. He fanned seven over 92 pitches.
The Rays won the sevengame season series 4-3.
Guardians 5, Red Sox 4: Andres Gimenez collected two hits and drove in two runs to help Cleveland win at Boston in the tail end of a four-game series.
Carlos Carrasco (1-1) held Boston to two runs in 5 2⁄3 innings to earn the win. He gave up four hits, struck out five and walked three. Emmanuel Clase retired the side in order in the ninth to collect his fifth save as the Guardians won three games in the series.
Jarren Duran drove in two runs and scored twice for the Red Sox, who struck out 10 times.
Boston committed two errors that led to three unearned runs. The Red
Sox have 20 errors in 20 games this season.
Cooper Criswell (0-1) surrendered four runs (one earned) on three hits in 2 1⁄3 innings of relief.
