Boone ejected in first inning of Yanks’ loss; he says he was blamed for a fan’s yelling
Zack Gelof hit a two-run home run in the ninth inning and Oakland eked out a 2-0 victory in New York on Monday afternoon in a game that featured a bizarre early ejection of Yankees manager Aaron Boone.
After loading the bases in the eighth, Oakland broke through against reliever Victor Gonzalez (1-1). After Gonzalez slipped trying to field an infield single by Abraham Toro, Gelof blasted a 2-2 sinker into the right-center field seats.
Oakland’s Mason Miller blazed through the ninth by striking out the side for his fifth save. He reached 103 mph on a whiff of
Juan Soto and ended it by fanning Aaron Judge on a 102 mph fastball.
JP Sears, whom the A’s acquired from New York in 2022 for Frankie Montas, limited his former team to three singles in six innings.
The Yankees lost for the fifth time in eight games and were blanked for the fourth time this season.
New York starter Carlos Rodon pitched seven sharp innings, allowing only a single to Nick Allen in the fifth. He struck out four and walked two.
Rodon also hit two batters, including Oakland leadoff man Esteury Ruiz, who opened the game by being hit on the foot.
Soon after Ruiz reached, Boone was tossed by plate umpire Hunter Wendelstedt.
After Oakland’s Tyler Nevin started his at-bat, audio on the YES Network clearly picked up Wendelstedt yelling at Boone in the dugout.
“Guess what. You’re not yelling at me, I did what I’m supposed to do and checked!” Wendelstedt said. “I’m looking for him to get hit by the pitch! You got anything else to say, you’re gone! OK?”
Cameras showed Boone not saying a word in response, yet Wendelstedt ejected him moments later. Boone responded by coming out of the dugout to say he did not say anything and that a fan behind the Yankee dugout was yelling. Wendelstedt countered by saying, “I don’t care who said it, you’re gone.”
Brewers: Right-hander Jakob Junis was taken away in an ambulance Monday after being hit in the neck by a line drive during batting practice in Pittsburgh. ESPN.com reported that he was standing in the outfield when he was hit. He remained down for 20 minutes while being treated. The team said he was alert and responsive and sent to a hospital for evaluation.
Dodgers: Designated hitter Shohei Ohtani said he felt relief and happiness Sunday after hitting a 423-foot bomb to pass Hideki Matsui for most career homers by a Japanese-born player in MLB.
Ohtani hit the two-run blast in the third inning of a 10-0 triumph over the New York Mets at Dodger Stadium. He now has 176 career long balls. Matsui hit 175 home runs from 2003 through 2012; all but 35 of them came with the Yankees.
“It took a while to get to this point,” Ohtani said. “I’m just honestly happy and relieved.”
Ohtani needed 2,576 at-bats to reach 176 homers. Matsui recorded his 175th homer in his 4,354th career at-bat.
Phillies: The team put first baseman Bryce Harper on the paternity list. He and his wife, Kayla, announced last month that they were expecting their third child.
White Sox: By losing 8-2 at Philadelphia on Sunday, Chicago fell to 3-18, the worst 21-game start in franchise history. The Phillies’ Kyle Schwarber homered, hit a sacrifice fly, walked three times and scored three runs.
