LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
Every spring, a family of rubythroated hummingbirds settles in at the feeder outside the kitchen window of my parents’ home in Ottawa, Illinois. Maybe it’s the sugar water my mom keeps the feeder filled with, or the feast of flowers growing in the garden across the driveway, but once spring hits, they’re there like clockwork. After the quiet of winter, seeing those birds dramatically flit, bob, and weave at the window, wings madly flapping, is one of my favorite signs of the new season.
Chicago in spring has that same humming, thrumming energy. It’s the excitement of a new season in our theaters and on our ball fields; the beckoning of the lakefront to legions of fitness enthusiasts; and the blossoming of our incredible green spaces, from Calumet Park just this side of Indiana to Juneway Park in my own stomping grounds on the far North Side. Simply put, when the season arrives it’s an incredibly transformative new beginning for the city, and even after nearly 20 years as a Chicagoan it never fails to thrill me.
Someone else who knows a thing or two about new beginnings? Our cover star Guliana Rancic. In 2012 (coincidentally, the last time she graced our cover), Giuliana was in the midst of a battle with breast cancer. Today, she’s celebrating five years cancer-free and is living her Chicago dream as wife, mother, and powerhouse entrepreneur. We’re inspired by her story and thrilled to celebrate her third Michigan Avenue cover with a must-read interview done by none other than her husband, Bill Rancic. Both frank and funny, it’s a lovely portrait of one of the city’s coolest couples—and the perfect way to kick off this humming, thrumming new season in the city.
