Premium pet food manufacturer Stella & Chewy’s is recalling products after government testing detected listeria in some of its chicken patties for dogs.

The Oak Creek firm took the action Saturday, two days after the Maryland Department of Agriculture ordered sales of the patties stopped because of the test results.

Besides being dangerous to dogs, listeria can kill small children, the elderly and people with autoimmune disorders, the agency said. No pet or human illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall, Stella & Chewy’s said.

At issue are 15-ounce bags of freeze-dried Chewy’s Chicken Dinner Patties for dogs, from Lot #111-15.

People should throw away unopened bags, the Maryland Agriculture Department said. It urged anyone with packages already opened to place them in double plastic bags — using disposable gloves — seal them and throw them away.

Stella & Chewy’s said it is voluntarily recalling all products nationwide from Lot #111-15.

Stella & Chewy’s also is recalling products that have not tested positive for listeria but may have come into contact with the affected lot. The company has listed identifying information on everything being recalled on its website.

People who have purchased the products being recalled may return them for a full refund, the firm said.
