Jordan Spieth electrified the gallery with a birdie-birdie-birdie finish and put an exclamation mark on it with a beautiful approach on the difficult par-4 18th. His shot from 198 yards checked to a stop 7 feet from the hole and he rolled in the putt for a 30 on the back nine and a 65.

QUOTABLE

“It’s just fun. It’s really fun to play. And at the same time, it’s a beautiful spot. It’s very, very difficult to beat views like this, and having such an exciting golf course. So that’s why for me it’s the best course in America that I’ve played.” — Martin Kaymer, on Whistling Straits

“What now? I’m probably going to go home and watch the leaders tee off and play. Probably in Florida. Actually, I’ll go to my sports bar. How about that?” — Tiger Woods, after missing the cut

OUTSIDE THE ROPES

The folks in the Michelob Ultra corporate chalet had an up-close view of Matt Jones after his tee shot at the par-4 ninth hole took a sharp left turn and came to a stop on carpeting outside the chalet.

“The ball came up, hit on the blue carpet, hit the chalet top and bounced right between our legs. Funny as heck,” said Tyson Gutschow of Sheboygan, who was sitting with his son Spencer.

“He came up, took a look at his lie, looked at his options and said, ‘Move the planters, I have a line,’ ” said

Derrick Watson of Denver. Jones hit the shot off the carpet — he picked it cleanly — and exchanged high-fives with a couple fans as he left the chalet. A few others toasted him with beers, presumably Michelob Ultras. He went on to make a bogey on the hole.

Julie Broderick of Palatine, Ill., overhead another spectator say of Jones’ shot: “He probably had a lot of practice on his mom’s carpet.”

WHAT TO WATCH SUNDAY It’s all about the final pairing of

Jason Day and Jordan Spieth. Day, who has a two-shot lead and is ranked fifth in the world, will be trying to win his first major championship after numerous close calls. Spieth will be trying to become only the third man to win three major championships in a calendar year, joining Ben

Hogan (1953) and Tiger Woods (2000). Spieth also can take over the No. 1 spot in the Official World Golf Ranking.
