GAME REPORT BREWERS 4, PHILLIES 2

-

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE

Shane Peterson has kept himself in the Brewers lineup with his bat, but manager Craig Counsell has not hesitated to play Peterson in center since Carlos Gomez was traded. Considered more of a corner outfielder, Peterson started his 13th game in center Saturday night. “We don’t think twice about putting him out there, which for a guy that never played there is a pretty good sign,” said Counsell. “He’s had quality at-bats. We moved him to the top of the lineup and the quality of his at-bats haven’t changed. He’s going up there and takes his at-bat, what he’s good at.”

In terms of the playoff race, the Brewers have had nothing to play for since April. But Counsell noted that many players on his roster have plenty to play for as management tries to determine who the keepers are. “There’s a lot of players here with a tremendous amount of opportunity,” he said. “You’re begging for players to surprise you pleasantly. We’ve talked about it. I don’t think you have to remind guys too much of that. Opportunities are treasured. They understand that.”

STATITUDES

Jonathan Lucroy entered the game in one of the worst slumps of his career, with just four hits in 44 at-bats (.091). He grounded out to third in his first two at-bats before doubling to left-center his third time up and singling in his final at-bat.

Reliever Will Smith is 5-1 with a 1.73 ERA in 32 appearances at home. He has struck out 39 batters in 26 innings in those games.
