AROUND THE BASES
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK MLB: Seattle RHP Hisashi Iwakuma
Iwakuma pitched the fifth no-hitter in Seattle history Wednesday in a 3-0 victory over Baltimore. He became only the second Japanese pitcher to throw a no-hitter (Hideo Nomo threw a pair). Amazingly, it also was the first complete game of Iwakuma’s career.
BREWERS: LF Khris Davis
With two home runs last Sunday against St. Louis and another Friday night against Philadelphia, Davis ran his total to five home runs over an eight-game span.
BREWERS THIS WEEK
The Brewers conclude a stretch in which they play 17 of 20 games at home with a three-game series against the Miami Marlins. After a day off Thursday, they head to the nation’s capital for a three-game series against the Washington Nationals.
DID YOU KNOW?
On Tuesday, all 15 home teams won their games for the first time since MLB expanded to 30 teams in 1998. The previous high for a home sweep in one day was 12 on May 23, 1914, when all four host teams won from the three leagues — National, American and Federal.
YOU FIGURE IT OUT
Atlanta right-hander Shelby Miller has gone winless over 15 consecutive starts, a franchise record. Never mind that he has a 3.16 ERA over that span.
During those 15 games, the Braves scored a total of 30 runs, and only 14 while Miller was still on the mound. He has received no run support this season in 10 of his starts, most in the majors.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the only other pitcher since 1920 to go winless for 15 starts with an ERA as low as Miller’s was the New York Mets’ Craig Swan in 1978. Swan had a 2.82 ERA over 15 starts without a victory.
Miller’s run support of 2.54 is lowest in the majors among qualifying starting pitchers.
