‘The Wave’

One of the challenges of being in a midsize city is we don’t often get a real sample of other countries’ movies: no French slapstick comedies, no British horror, no Japanese romances.

“The Wave” is rated R for some language and disaster scenes. It’s in Norwegian with English subtitles. It runs for 105 minutes.

‘The Boy and the Beast’

March is turning into a pretty good month for anime fans. First, the Avalon Theater launched its monthlong salute to Japanese animation master Hayao Miyazaki; next week, the Oriental Theatre brings a restored Studio Ghibli gem, “Only Yesterday.”

In between, AMC Mayfair Mall is showing “The Boy and the Beast,” a fable about a street orphan who is taken in by a warrior beast in the hopes of making him his apprentice.

Count Los Angeles Times reviewer Charles Solomon among the movie’s fans. “‘Boy and Beast’ is a bracing tale of two flawed individual­s who find the love and discipline they need to assume their rightful places in their respective worlds.”

“The Boy and the Beast” is rated PG-13 for some violence and language. It’s in Japanese with English subtitles. It runs for 119 minutes.
