THE JACKSONS

-

8:45 p.m. Saturday, Wisconsin Center, 400 W. Wisconsin Ave. $49 at grandslamcharityjam.

Michael Jackson’s solo career alone is one of pop music’s mightiest legacies — and that’s before you add in the accomplishments of his breakout group with his brothers, the Jackson 5.

It was a classic rags-to-riches story. Lead singer Michael and his brothers Jackie, Tito, Marlon and Jermaine escaped Gary, Ind., through their dazzling talent, becoming a star act on Motown Records in 1969 with a fresh, funky, soulful pop sound.

There’d be bumps in the road, including a split from Motown for Epic Records, Jermaine being replaced by brother Randy, and Michael leaving the group. But nothing was quite as devastating as Michael Jackson’s death in 2009: Out of that grief, fans found an outlet through surviving brothers Jackie, Tito, Marlon and Jermaine, who toured again as the Jacksons in 2012.

And aside from Jermaine, the Jacksons will be at the Wisconsin Center Saturday for the Grand Slam Charity Jam, an annual benefit concert for Grafton-based nonprofit Camp Hometown Heroes, which helps children of parents who died while serving in the U.S. military. Andi & Alex — identical twin sisters from Green Bay who are one of the Journal Sentinel’s Wisconsin Bands to Watch for 2016 — will open.
