Jamerson’s fibula might be broken

- JEFF POTRYKUS

Madison — Wisconsin officials fear that reserve cornerback Natrell Jamerson suffered a broken left fibula late in UW's 5410 victory over Akron and could be sidelined indefinitely.

Jamerson was helped off the field with 6 minutes 22 seconds remaining after making a tackle.

TV cameras showed a UW official mouthing “left fibula” as Jamerson was brought to the team’s sideline. Jamerson, who did not put any weight on his leg as he was helped off the field, was taken by cart to a tunnel and then placed in a wheelchair.

A UW official on Sunday said that head coach Paul Chryst would not address Jamerson’s status until his weekly news conference on Monday.

Jamerson is UW’s No. 3 cornerback, behind starters Sojourn Shelton and Derrick Tindal, and a key performer on special teams.

He four tackles against Akron, tying for the team lead. He has six tackles through two games, tied for the third-highest total on the team.

Jamerson is averaging 20.0 yards on three kickoff returns and is the team’s top gunner on punt coverage.

UW’s fourth and fifth cornerbacks against Akron recorded were junior Lubern Figaro and redshirt freshman Titus Booker. The fourth cornerback in camp, however, was freshman Caesar Williams. Williams, from Grand Prairie, Texas, has not played this season.

The fibula is smaller than the tibia, which is the largest weight-bearing bone of the leg.

Wide receiver Robert Wheelwright suffered a broken fibula last season, on Oct. 24 at Illinois. He missed UW’s final four regular-season games, which spanned five weeks because of a late bye.

Wheelwright did return for the Holiday Bowl on Dec. 30, however, and played well. He caught four passes for 47 yards and showed no ill-effects of the injury.
