BEHIND THE BOX SCORE

Hernan Perez, ejected by umpire Carlos Torres on Saturday night for disputing a bad called third strike in a key situation in the eighth inning, took the lineup card to home plate for the umps before the game. Perez talked to Torres during that meeting and patted him on the back before returning to the dugout. He said the gesture was suggested by coach Carlos Subero and teammates.

It is no secret that slugger Chris Carter is prone to strikeouts but he stayed alive for 11 pitches against righthander Luke Weaver in the first inning to deliver a sacrifice fly that gave the Brewers their only run until Ryan Braun‘s decisive homer in the ninth. “He fouled off a bunch of pitches and really fought that at-bat, and got a ball in the outfield,” manager Craig Counsell said. “The dugout was fired up for him.” STATITUDES

It’s not just that Keon Broxton is hitting so much better (.311) in his fourth stint with the Brewers this season. He’s also flashing power with six homers during that span, including a 429-foot blast off Cards ace Adam Wainwright on Saturday night. Broxton has struck out 77 times in 186 at-bats but 33 came in 64 at-bats during his first three stints with the club. “Keon’s power is going to come from consistent contact,” Counsell said. “He’s got plenty of power to hit home runs. If he makes hard contact, there will be plenty of balls that go out of the park.”

The starting pitchers have been on a roll in recent weeks, compiling a 2.83 ERA over the last 20 games, the best mark in the majors over that span. “Everybody is a competitor in here,” Zach Davies said. “They want to do better than the last guy. Not so much where you’re ruining friendships and things like that but it’s nice to try to do better than the last guy and just keep that rolling.” RECORD This year: 64-79 Last year: 62-81 Home: 39-36 Road: 25-43 COMING UP Monday: 6:10 p.m. at Great American Ball Park.
