Eye surgery could keep Zimmer out

Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer is having emergency eye surgery, about a month after he had a procedure to repair a torn retina.

Vikings general manager Rick Spielman said Wednesday night Zimmer was having the operation and he was uncertain to recover in time for the team’s game against Dallas on Thursday night.

Spielman said he has met with coaches and players to put a contingenc­y plan in place in case Zimmer is unable to coach against the Cowboys.

Zimmer first experience­d trouble with his vision a couple of days before the Oct. 31 game at Chicago and inadverten­tly scratched the eye during the game.

Kelly staying put: With the University of Oregon head coaching position officially open, Chip Kelly isn’t changing his tune.

The San Francisco 49ers coach reiterated he has no intention to return to the school after Mark Helfrich was fired.

Amid the 49ers’ 10game losing streak and consistent speculatio­n about a coaching change for the Ducks, Kelly had stated in previous weeks that he has not spoken with anyone at Oregon and that he was not interested in pursuing the job.

Asked Wednesday if he would remain with the 49ers, Kelly said, “Yep. So we’re all done with that, I hope.”

Kelly led the Ducks to a 46-7 record from 2009-’12, a four-year run that included three conference championsh­ips and a trip to the 2011 National Championsh­ip Game. He then left to coach the Philadelph­ia Eagles.

Watt helps boy in need: J.J. Watt has donated $10,000 to a Houstonare­a high school football player who is in a coma after suffering a brain injury in a playoff game.

Grant Milton, a senior at The Woodlands High School, was injured Saturday during a game in Waco and was rushed to a hospital, where he remains in a coma.

A Go Fund Me account was set up to raise money for Milton’s medical care. Watt, the Houston Texans star defensive end who was a standout at the University of Wisconsin, signed his name to the donation on the Go Fund Me page with a note that read: “If there’s anything that I can do to help, please let me know. Sending my best wishes to Grant and the entire Milton family.”

Foot bothering Siemian: Denver Broncos quarterbac­k Trevor Siemian is wearing a protective boot after injuring his left foot during an overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

Should Siemian’s foot not heal fast enough for him to play this week, rookie Paxton Lynch would be make his second start.
