Louisville stops Purdue’s rally
Ray Spalding and Mangok Mathiang each scored 11 points and Donovan Mitchell contributed seven critical points down the stretch Wednesday night to help No. 14 Louisville hold off No. 16 Purdue, 71-64, in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
Seeking to rebound from their second-half collapse against Baylor in the Battle 4 Atlantis championship when they lost a 22point lead, the host Cardinals (6-1) held Purdue to a season-low 36% shooting but needed key baskets in the final minutes as the Boilermakers cut a 51-33 deficit to four with 14.4 seconds left.
Caleb Swanigan had 14 points and 11 rebounds and P.J. Thompson had 13 points, but the Boilermakers (5-2) had their four-game winning streak stopped.
Virgina Tech 73, Michigan 70: Zach LeDay scored 15 of his 18 points in the second half, and the Hokies rallied from a 15-point first-half deficit to beat the Wolverines.
Visiting Virginia Tech (6-1) trailed, 6763, late in the second half before a threepointer by Justin Bibbs started an 8-0 run.
Zak Irvin led Michigan (5-2) with 23 points.
Miami 73, Rutgers 61: Freshman Dewan Huell had 14 points and seven rebounds and the host Hurricanes scored 17 consecutive points in the second half to defeat the Scarlet Knights in the ACC/ Big Ten Challenge
Another freshman, Bruce Brown, scored 11 points for the Hurricanes (5-2), including a three-point play with less than two minutes left.
Previously undefeated Rutgers (6-1) had been off to its best start since the Scarlet Knights’ 1975-’76 Final Four season. BIG EAST
Providence 76, New Hampshire 62: Rodney Bullock scored a collegiate-high 36 points to lead the Friars to an easy victory.
Bullock was 12 of 21 from the field, including 5 of 8 from the three-point arc, for host Providence (5-2).
Georgetown 96, Coppin State 44: Rodney Pryor’s 7 threepointers fueled the Hoyas’ rout over the visiting Eagles (0-9).
Pryor was 7 of 8 from behind the arc and finished with 30 points. The Hoyas (4-4) made a season-high 14 three-pointers.
HORIZON
Kansas State 80, UW-Green Bay 61: Barry Brown scored 18 points and Xavier Sneed added 14 points as the host Wildcats (6-1) coasted past the Phoenix.
Turner Botz led Green Bay (4-3) with 11 points.
WOMEN
UW-Green Bay 63, Bradley 42: Allie LeClaire scored 23 points and the Phoenix led wire-to-wire in a rout over the Braves (2-4) in Peoria, Ill. UWGB (4-1) shot 50% from the floor and led by as many as 25 points.
