The Left’s problem

-

In her column, “The right’s hypocrisy on identity,” Emily Mills strives to refute the claim that the Left lost the presidential election because of an inordinate focus on identity politics, but her words actually support that very proposition (Crossroads, Nov. 27).

She would have her readers believe that those who voted for Donald Trump did so because of their identity as straight, white, Christian males, along with their supposed animosity towards anyone whose identity does not align with theirs.

In reality, Trump voters comprise a diverse group that hopes to see positive changes in things such as job opportunities, wage growth, reduced costs for health care and college education and better security at home and abroad.

Mills writes that a wide variety of people of different backgrounds, faiths and identities must be given a place at the table, as if they are being refused service by a domineering gang of white Christian males who haven’t seen a pay increase in 20 years.

I would suggest that Mills take her own advice and get out of her neighborhood and try to understand the people who disagree with her. She might be surprised to find that most decent, respectful, non-racist, non-misogynist, non-homophobic, non-xenophobic men and women whose main desire is to be given the opportunity to improve their lives through hard work and personal responsibility.
