Cutler will have season-ending surgery
Jay Cutler’s season is over and his time in Chicago might be, too.
Coach John Fox announced Thursday that the veteran quarterback will have season-ending surgery on his right shoulder, the latest blow in a lost year for the Bears.
The operation to repair the labrum will take place on Saturday.
“I talked to him earlier today. He’s in good spirits,” Fox said. “It wasn’t like it was never going to be an option. You try to avoid it, especially for a quarterback on your throwing shoulder. But he talked to many capable doctors, like he should. So that’s been the determination at this point.”
Matt Barkley figures to start his second straight game when the Bears (2-9) host San Francisco (1-10) in a matchup between struggling teams on Sunday.
Cutler injured his shoulder during a loss to the New York Giants on Nov. 20 but finished the game. If he has thrown his last pass for Chicago, Fox was not about to confirm it.
“You know, off-season is the off-season,” Fox said. “We’re not there yet.”
Gronkowski needs surgery: Rob Gronkowski’s season might be over.
The star New England Patriots tight end is having surgery for a herniated disk in his back, a person with knowledge of the details said. The surgery was first reported by The Buffalo News.
He’s likely to be out for eight weeks or more. The Super Bowl is scheduled for Houston on Feb. 5, should the Patriots get that far.
More officials: Get ready for some full-time NFL officials to start throwing yellow flags next year.
Troy Vincent, the league’s vice president of football operations, said he expects the NFL to hire as many as 17 full-time officials this off-season.
The additions would increase the size of officiating crews from seven to eight.
McKnight killed: Former NFL player Joe McKnight was shot to death following an argument at an intersection with another motorist.
Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand said the incident happened in Terrytown, a suburb of New Orleans.
McKnight played for the New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs.
Cowboys 17, Vikings 15: Under pressure with 25 seconds left, Minnesota quarterback Sam Bradford sailed a pass out of the end zone on a twopoint conversion attempt as Dallas hung on to beat the Vikings in Minneapolis.
Indiana will be looking for its sixth football coach since 1997. Bobby Knight is always available.
