Goodson placed on IR

Green Bay — The Green Bay Packers made two roster moves Saturday ahead of their home game Sunday against the Houston Texans.

Cornerback Demetri Goodson (knee) was placed on injured reserve, and cornerback Makinton Dorleant (hamstring) was activated using the team’s designated-to-return option.

Goodson, a reserve cornerback and key special teams player, had been thrust into a starting role with injuries to Sam Shields, Damarious Randall and Quinten Rollins. He suffered a horrific knee injury in the loss to Washington two weeks ago and was carted off the field. Television cameras captured Goodson openly weeping on his way to the locker room.

The decision to activate Dorleant, an undrafted free agent from Northern Iowa, was two weeks in the making, and coach Mike McCarthy mentioned the idea before the win over the Philadelphia Eagles last week.

A speedy and feisty corner, Dorleant impressed during training camp and was one of four undrafted free agents in the secondary of general manager Ted Thompson’s initial 53man roster. His exhibition season was cut short by a hamstring injury that eventually landed him on injured reserve.

If Randall, LaDarius Gunter and Rollins are all available for Sunday’s game, Dorleant is unlikely to see the field from scrimmage, though he should contribute on special teams. But the Packers added Randall (groin) to the injury report Saturday and listed him as questionable.

Guard T.J. Lang and center-guard JC Tretter both were downgraded to out and will not play Sunday.

The Texans received some unfortunate injury news of their own when defensive end Jadeveon Clowney (elbow/ wrist) was ruled out. Clowney, the former No. 1 overall pick, was one of the team’s best defensive players in the absence of superstar J.J. Watt, who is on injured reserve.
