Zimmer’s eye ‘good to go’

Vikings coach cleared to travel

-

Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer has received further clearance to travel with the team this weekend, following surgery to repair a detached retina.

Zimmer said Wednesday he’s “good to go” after his latest follow-up exam. The patch he wore over his right eye during practice Tuesday had been removed, and he’s expected to resume his regular duties for the game Sunday at Jacksonville. Zimmer had to stay home last week while the Vikings played Dallas.

When asked about alternative arrangements such as coaching from the press box to reduce the strain on his eye, Zimmer said his doctors were discussing scenarios with him but declined to be specific.

Pierre-Paul has surgery: New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul is going to miss the rest of the regular season after surgery to repair a sports hernia.

The 27-year-old old tweeted on Wednesday that he had surgery and was feeling well.

Pierre-Paul sustained the injury in the second quarter of Sunday’s loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The normal recovery time from hernia surgery is four to six weeks, so Pierre-Paul needs the Giants to end a four-year playoff drought to play again this season.

The Giants (8-4) have not commented on Pierre-Paul’s tweet. Coach Ben McAdoo said on Monday that Pierre-Paul was going to be evaluated. Teammates on Tuesday said they did not think he would be ready by Sunday for a game at MetLife Stadium against the Dallas Cowboys.

Kindred breaks ankle: Cleveland Browns rookie safety Derrick Kindred broke his ankle during the team’s bye week and will miss the remainder of the season.

Coach Hue Jackson did not divulge how Kindred was injured, but said Wednesday that it was not from doing anything “malicious” and it does not change the way the team feels about the fourth-round draft pick from TCU.

Kindred made five starts and appeared in all 12 games. He’s one of the few Cleveland rookies to stand out during a so-far winless season. Kindred was credited with 44 tackles (30 solo) and five defensed passes.

Jackson did not say who will replace Kindred.

Ex-Cowboys linebacker dies: Former Dallas Cowboys linebacker Dave Edwards has died. He was 76.

Edwards’ brother, Tim Edwards, told The Associated Press that Dave Edwards died in his sleep Monday night at his home near Lake Whitney, Texas, about 65 miles south of Dallas.

Tim Edwards said his brother was recently diagnosed with a heart condition and was set to undergo surgery this week.

Edwards played for 12 seasons in Dallas from 1963 to 1975 and was a key cog in the Cowboys defense.

Edwards won one Super Bowl with the Cowboys and played in two others.
