Gomez agrees to remain with Rangers

Outfielder Carlos Gomez has agreed to an $11.5 million, one-year contract to remain with the Texas Rangers, according to two people familiar with the negotiatio­ns.

The people spoke on condition of anonymity Wednesday because the agreement was subject to a physical and had not been announced.

Gomez, who turned 31 last weekend, figures to play center field in an outfield that includes Shin Soo Choo in right and Nomar Mazara in left.

He was released by Houston in August, signed with Texas and hit .284 with eight homers and 24 RBI in 33 games. An allstar in 2013 and ’14 with Milwaukee, Gomez has a .257 average and 116 home runs in 10 big league seasons.

Cubs, Royals make a deal: The World Series champion Chicago Cubs have acquired star closer Wade Davis from the Kansas City Royals for outfielder Jorge Soler.

The trade was announced Wednesday at the winter meetings.

Davis will take over the ninth-inning role held by Aroldis Chapman, who became a free agent after the Cubs won their first championsh­ip since 1908.

The 31-year-old Davis went 2-1 with 27 saves in 30 tries and a 1.87 ERA last season. He spent time on the disabled with a forearm injury and was limited to 431⁄3 innings, but returned to pitch in September.

Locke goes to Miami: Left-hander Jeff Locke agreed to a one-year contract with the Miami Marlins worth $3,025,000, according to two people familiar with the negotiatio­ns.

The people spoke on condition of anonymity Wednesday because the agreement was subject to a physical and had not been announced.

The 29-year-old had spent his entire big league career with Pittsburgh and was 9-8 with a 5.44 ERA this year in 19 starts and 11 relief appearance­s.

Desmond, Rockies agree to terms: All-star free agent outfielder Ian Desmond and the Colorado Rockies have agreed to a $70 million, five-year contract, a person familiar with the negotiatio­ns told the AP.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Wednesday because the agreement had not been announced.

A versatile 31-year-old, Desmond hit .285 with 22 homers and 86 RBI this year in his lone season with Texas, earning his first All-Star Game trip since 2012. He played shortstop from 2011-’15, then was shifted to the outfield by the Rangers. Colorado may move him to first base.
