45 soldiers killed by bomber inside base

Sanaa, Yemen — A suicide bomber on Saturday blew himself up inside an army base in the southern city of Aden, killing 45 soldiers and wounding another 50, security officials said.

They said the bomber detonated a belt of explosives he was wearing amid hundreds of soldiers lining up to collect their salaries in the city’s Solban army base.

The Islamic State group’s Yemeni affiliate claimed responsibi­lity for the attack in a statement posted on social media sites known to be sympatheti­c with the extremist group. It was impossible to immediatel­y verify the claim.

More than 25 dead in two explosions

Istanbul — Two powerful explosions — including a possible car bomb — reportedly killed 29 people, including 27 police officers, and wounded 166 others Saturday outside a soccer stadium in central Istanbul.

A Turkish official who gave the death toll spoke on condition anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly on the issue, according to The Associated Press. He cited health ministry figures.

“It is thought to be a car bomb at a point where our special forces police were located, right after the match at the exit where Bursaspor fans exited, after the fans had left,” said Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu, according to Turkey’s staterun Anadolu Agency. The second blast appeared to have been caused by a suicide bomber, he said.

Tanker train derails, explodes in village

Sofia, Bulgaria — A derailed tanker train exploded Saturday and decimated a village in northeaste­rn Bulgaria, killing seven people and leaving least 29 injured, many with severe burns, the Interior Ministry said.

Authoritie­s said about 50 buildings in the village of Hitrino were destroyed when containers of gas exploded at 5:40 a.m.

Two tanker cars carrying propane-butane and propylene derailed at the station in Hitrino, hit nearby electric lines and exploded, police officials said. The engine driver survived and has been questioned, police said.

Mexico City — A radio station in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua says one of its reporters has been shot dead outside his home.

Antena Radio in the state capital, also called Chihuahua, said Adrian Rodriguez was killed Saturday morning and prosecutor­s are investigat­ing whether his work may have been a motive.

Antena Radio adds that Rodriguez spent more than 15 years at radio, print and online outlets. He joined Antena’s parent company GRD Multimedia in April to cover state and local government.

Mexico is one of the world’s most dangerous countries for journalist­s. According to the Committee to Protect Journalist­s, at least eight were killed in Mexico this year prior to Rodriguez’s death.

Kerry awarded French Legion of Honor

Paris — U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is now an officer in France’s Legion of Honor. French Foreign Minister JeanMarc Ayrault bestowed the award on Kerry on Saturday after the two held talks on Syria’s war.

Calling him a “friend to France,” the Foreign Ministry said he earned the distinctio­n for “his indefatiga­ble efforts in favor of peace.”

Kerry has visited Paris countless times as secretary of state for high-level diplomatic meetings on Syria, Ukraine and other hotspots.
