WHEN THE BOUGH BREAKS In this thriller, Morris Chestnut and Regina Hall play a couple whose desperatio­n to have a child leads them to a surrogate, played by newcomer Jaz Sinclair, who becomes overly attached to the baby’s fatherto-be. AMERICAN HONEY A teenager looking for adventure and cash hooks up with a crew peddling magazines door to door, and finds more, and less, than she bargained for. Indie drama directed by Andrea Arnold (“Fish Tank”) with Sasha Lane, Shia LaBeouf, Riley Keough. (R; strong sexual content, nudity, pervasive language, drug/alcohol abuse) A MAN CALLED OVE A curmudgeon­ly widower forms an unexpected bond with his new neighbors. Comedy-drama, based on a bestseller, with Rolf Lassgård. In Swedish with English subtitles. On the short list for this year’s Oscar nomination­s for best foreign-language film (PG-13; thematic content, language) THE DRESSMAKER Kate Winslet plays a glamorous seamstress who returns to her rural Australian hometown to reconnect with her mother, played by Judy Davis, and get revenge against the town, which still blames her for a tragedy from her childhood.

With Liam Hemsworth, Hugo Weaving. (R; brief language, a scene of violence) DOG EAT DOG A mobster hires three ex-cons (Nicolas Cage, Willem Dafoe, Christophe­r Matthew Cook) to kidnap a baby, and it does not go well. Caper movie directed by Paul Schrader (“American Gigolo,” “Affliction”). (Not rated; violence, sexual situations)

IN THE VALLEY OF VIOLENCE A drifter (Ethan Hawke) is chased out of an Old West town after stepping up to a fight challenge, but the man he knocked out won’t leave it alone. Western with John Travolta, Karen Gillan. (Not rated; violence)

PET When an old crush spurns his advances, a security guard kidnaps her and keeps her in a cage. Thriller with Dominic Monaghan, Ksenia Solo. (R; violence, gore, some grisly images, language, brief sexuality)

SULLY Tom Hanks plays Chesley “Sully” Sullenberg­er III, the captain of that US Airways flight that made that miraculous landing in the Hudson River. Drama directed by Clint Eastwood focuses on the man and the aftermath of the near-tragedy, with Aaron Eckhart as Jeff Skiles, the Wisconsin native who was Sullenberg­er’s co-pilot. (PG-13; intense scenes, brief language) THE MAGNIFICEN­T SEVEN An Old West bounty hunter leads a septet of fighters in defending a town from a ruthless industrial­ist. Remake of the 1960 Western, itself a redo of Akira Kurosawa’s “Seven Samurai,” directed by Antoine Fuqua with Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke. (PG-13; violence, historical smoking, some language, suggestive material)

STORKS Storks are out of the baby-delivering business and working for a giant internet retailer, but when a stork starts up the outfit’s old baby-making machinery by mistake, he sets out to keep his error off the radar by delivering the baby to a worthy family. Animated comedy with voices by Andy Samberg, Jennifer Aniston, Ty Burrell. (PG; some thematic elements) THE DISAPPOINT­MENTS ROOM A couple and their 5-year-old son move from Brooklyn to a fading mansion in a rural part of the South that seems to have everything they want, and one thing they definitely don’t: a ghostly secret locked away in a mysterious room. Thriller reportedly based on true events, with Kate Beckinsale, Mel Raido. (R; violent content, gore, some sexuality, language) TO JOEY, WITH LOVE Inspiratio­nal documentar­y about the lives of country duo Rory and Joey Feek, including Joey’s battle with cancer, told using 2 1⁄2 years of home videos. (not rated) IT HAD TO BE YOU Romantic comedy starring Cristin Milioti as a woman who hesitates when her boyfriend’s proposal becomes an ultimatum. (R; some sexual content, language)

HITCHCOCK/TRUFFAUT Documentar­y recounting the incredible conversati­ons between Francois Truffaut and Alfred Hitchcock that became the basis for a groundbrea­king book on movies and moviemakin­g. (PG-13; suggestive material, violent images)

GOAT A new college student (Ben Schnetzer) is pushed by his older brother (Nick Jonas) to pledge a campus fraternity, where things suddenly take a dark, violent turn. (R; disturbing behavior, sexual content, nudity, pervasive language, violence, alcohol abuse, some drug use)

31 Carnival workers are held captive by a group of maniacs, who make them fight for their lives for 12 hours. Splatter-fest by Rob Zombie with a cast including Malcolm McDowell, Meg Foster, Sheri Moon Zombie, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs. (R; gore, violence, pervasive language, sexual content, drug use)

DAD’S ARMY On the British home front in 1944, a unit of the Home Guard, made up mostly of boys and older men, gets into mischief when an attractive journalist (Catherine Zeta-Jones) stops by to do a story. Comedy based on an old British TV series, with Bill Nighy, Toby Jones, Michael Gambon. (Not rated)

GREATER Inspiratio­nal, based-on-atrue-story sports drama about a small-town kid who played his way onto the Arkansas Razorbacks football team in the 1990s. With Neal McDonough, Chris Severio, Nick Searcy. (PG; thematic elements, some language, smoking) MAXIMUM RIDE Six DNA-enhanced orphans set out to find out how they got that way and defend others like them. Action movie based on James Patterson’s bestsellin­g series. (PG-13; some violence) CHILDREN OF THE MOUNTAIN When her son is born with a cleft lip, cerebral palsy and Down syndrome, a Ghanian woman sets out to find medical help while dealing with being shunned by society.
