Former Haitian rebel leader wanted by U.S. arrested

Port-au-Prince, Haiti — A former rebel leader who is wanted on U.S. drug charges, and was recently elected to the Haitian Senate, was arrested Thursday as he appeared on a live radio talk show.

Guy Philippe was being interviewed live on the show with another recently elected lawmaker when the host abruptly announced that police were outside the studio in the Petionville district of the capital to arrest him. The host came back on air and said authorities had taken him away.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, which barely missed capturing him in a 2007 raid, had no immediate comment on the arrest.

Philippe’s lawyer, Reynold Georges, said the former rebel leader been taken to the airport and he urged senators to go there to prevent his extradition.

Train was going faster than speed limit in terminal

The 50-year-old engineer told investigators on Thursday he has no memory of the collision, Turpin said.

New York — Greta Van Susteren’s absence from cable news proved short. MSNBC said Thursday that it has hired the former Fox News Channel anchor for a daily, Washington-based news program.

Van Susteren’s show will air at 5 p.m. Central time starting Monday.

A lawyer and Appleton native, Van Susteren got her start in television for CNN analyzing O.J. Simpson’s trial. After more than a decade at Fox, she left in late summer.

“Greta is a true pro with a proven record of tough journalism,” said MSNBC President Phil Griffin. “Her broad range of experience and sharp news judgment will be of great value to MSNBC as we build on our momentum going into a new year and a new administration.”
