Kenosha to consider $130 million project

- GUY BOULTON

Aurora Health Care plans to build a $130 million outpatient center in Kenosha that would include a surgical center and medical office building.

The 200,000-square-foot outpatient center, which is pending approval from the Kenosha Common Council, would create an estimated 140 jobs, according to Aurora’s application for rezoning.

It would be built on a 158acre site west of Interstate 94 between 60th St. and 71st St.

Other medical services planned for the center include primary and specialty care, rehabilitation services, imaging, laboratory and occupational health in addition to the surgical center.

“As a longtime member of the Kenosha community, we look forward to working with the city and neighbors to move this project forward on behalf of our patients,” Doug Koch, president of the Aurora market that includes Racine, Kenosha and Northern Illinois, said in a statement.

In recent years, Aurora also has announced plans to build, expand or renovate hospitals and clinics in Burlington, Elkhorn and Sheboygan.

The majority of surgeries done today do not require an

overnight stay in a hospital and are done on an outpatient basis, and other health systems also are building new surgical centers.

In October, United Hospital System, which includes the Kenosha Medical Center Campus, won approval from the Pleasant Prairie Plan Commission for a conceptual plan to expand St. Catherine’s Medical Center Campus. The proposed 194,888-square-foot expansion would include an outpatient surgical wing built adjacent to the hospital.

United Hospital System’s two hospitals in the Kenosha area compete with Aurora Medical Center in Kenosha, one of Aurora’s most profitable hospitals.

The hospital had a net profit margin of 34% in 2015, reporting net income of $67.6 million on revenue of $198.4 million, according to information filed with the Wisconsin Hospital Association.
