Chargers hand the reins over to Lynn
Buffalo aide is team’s first black coach
The Chargers have hired Anthony Lynn as head coach one day after announcing they’re relocating to Los Angeles.
Lynn becomes the first black coach in franchise history.
He replaces Mike McCoy, who was fired Jan. 1 after going 27-37 in four seasons.
Lynn inherits a team that won only nine games in two seasons and missed the playoffs for the sixth time in seven seasons.
Lynn comes from the Buffalo Bills. He was promoted to offensive coordinator in mid-September after coach Rex Ryan fired Greg Roman. After Ryan was fired, Lynn was promoted to interim head coach for the final game, a loss to the New York Jets.
Chiefs-Steelers game time changes: The AFC divisional playoff game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Chiefs on Sunday has been moved from an early afternoon kickoff to prime time because of an ice storm due to hit the Kansas City area this weekend.
The game was scheduled to kick off at 12:05 p.m. It now will start at 7:20 p.m. to give road crews and public safety officials more time to treat roads and parking lots.
The forecast called for ice to move into the area late Friday, and persistent cold temperatures throughout Saturday and Sunday. More precipitation is expected Sunday, though mostly in the form of cold rain.
As if the cold, wet weather expected Sunday night wasn’t
bad enough, the Chiefs decided to re-sod the field between the hash marks earlier this week, which could leave a quagmire for the game.
Porter reinstated: Steelers assistant coach Joey Porter was back at work with the team and will travel to Sunday’s playoff game in Kansas City after prosecutors dropped all but two minor charges stemming from an altercation outside a Pittsburgh bar last weekend.
The Steelers had placed Porter on indefinite leave Monday but reconsidered when Allegheny County District Attorney
Stephen Zappala Jr. dropped charges of aggravated assault involving a police officer, simple assault, resisting arrest and defiant trespass in connection with Porter’s actions last Sunday involving a bouncer.
Zappala made the decision after reviewing surveillance video of the altercation, which occurred hours after the Steelers beat the Miami Dolphins in a wild-card playoff game.
Porter, who coaches the outside linebackers, still faces summary disorderly conduct and summary public drunkenness. The two citations each carry fines up to $500 and 90 days in jail.
