Georgetown tops Creighton

Bluejays fall again without Watson

-

Creighton entered its first meeting of the season against Georgetown seeking a winning formula without injured point guard Maurice Watson Jr.

The struggling Hoyas showed the 16th-ranked Bluejays no mercy.

L.J. Peak scored 20 points and Georgetown held Creighton to its lowest scoring game of the season in a 71-51 victory Wednesday night in Washington.

The Hoyas (11-10, 2-6 Big East) limited the Bluejays to 1 of 18 from three-point range and 34.5% shooting overall. Creighton (18-3, 5-3) entered the game second in the country at 52.8%.

Now the Bluejays have dropped two straight without Watson.

He suffered a seasonending knee injury in a victory over Xavier on Jan. 16. The Bluejays lost, 102-94, at home Saturday to Marquette.

(11) Butler 61, Seton Hall 54: Kethan Savage had 15 points and hit a goahead jumper with 4 minutes to play as the Bulldogs (18-3, 7-2) held off the Pirates (13-7, 3-5) after blowing a 13-point second-half lead.

Butler has won five straight games in the series and 7 of 8 since joining the Big East.

Seton Hall’s Angel Delgado had a career-high 22 rebounds — his second straight with 20.

St. John’s 91, Providence 86: Marcus LoVett scored 26 points, Shamorie Ponds added 22 and the Red Storm (10-12, 4-5) closed on a 6-0 run to beat the host Friars (13-9, 3-6). BIG TEN

Ohio State 78, Minnesota 72: Marc Loving and Trevor Thompson each scored 19 points to lift the Buckeyes (13-8, 3-5) over the Golden Gophers (15-4, 3-5) in Columbus, Ohio.

Thompson’s total was a career high, and he also led the Buckeyes with 10 rebounds. Loving bounced back from a disappointing performance Sunday, and Ohio State dealt Minnesota its third straight loss.

Illinois 76, Iowa 64: Michael Finke came off the bench to score 17 points as the Fighting Illini (13-8, 3-5) beat the Hawkeyes (11-10, 3-5) in Champaign, Ill.

Iowa’s Peter Jok, the Big Ten’s leading scorer at 21.6 points per game, managed only 10 points on 3-of-9 shooting. TOP 25

(5) Baylor 65, Texas Tech 61: Johnathan Motley scored 25 points and the Bears (19-1, 7-1 Big 12) beat the Red Raiders (14-6, 3-5) for their 13th straight home victory.

A week after getting a career-high 32 points against Texas, Motley was 15 of 16 on free throws.

Georgia Tech 78, (8) Florida State 56: The Yellow Jackets (12-8, 4-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) pulled off their second home upset of a top 10 opponent by beating the Seminoles (18-3, 6-2) in Atlanta.

Florida State never got closer than 18 points. Few signs pointed to a meltdown for the Seminoles. They were tied for first place in the ACC and had gone 5-1 in their last six games, all against ranked opponents.
