Making more waves

Classic 8 champion Waukesha South/Catholic Memorial nearly made it a clean sweep at its sectional meet Saturday.

The combined boys swim team won 10 of 12 events to run away with the Division 1 sectional title in a meet held at Waukesha South. South/Memorial racked up 4291⁄2 points, 1231⁄2 better than second-place Muskego.

The team had plenty of big winners.

Junior John Acevedo took the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute 40.51 seconds, the 500 free in 4:33.99 and was part of the team’s winning 200 and 400 free relays. Freshman Jacob Carlson was part of that 200 free relay that won in 1:26.66 and took the 50 free in 21.54, the 100 back in 52.16 and was a member of the 200 medley relay that won in 1:37.24.

The top finisher in each event qualified for the state meet, which will be held Friday for Division 2 and Saturday for Division 1 at the UW Natatorium in Madison. The rest of the field is filled based on sectional times.

The only events South didn’t win were diving, a title Marquette senior Lou Locher claimed, and the 100 breaststroke, which was won by Muskego’s Ben Gabbey.

Kenosha Tremper Sectional: Southeast Conference champion Franklin won every event except diving and the 200 individual medley to win the sectional title by 129 points.

Ashwaubenon Sectional: Grafton edged Ashwaubenon, 379-378, to win the Division 2 sectional. The meet came down to the final event, the 400 free relay, which Grafton won.

Whitefish Bay Sectional: Nicolet senior Riccardo Romersi went 4 for 4 in his events to lead the Knights to the sectional title in Division 2.
