- REBECCA CARBALLO

The Harvard Business School Club of Wisconsin will offer scholarships to four nonprofit leaders in Wisconsin to attend social enterprise courses at the school this spring.

The seminars are “Performance Measures for Effective Management of Nonprofit Organizations” to be held May 30June 2 or “Strategic Perspectives in Nonprofit Management” to be held July 16-22.

The winners will receive up to $6,000 in scholarship funding. The cost of course materials, room and board will be covered.

The scholarship provides tremendous networking opportunities, said past recipient Judy Haugsland, associate director of development at the Milwaukee School of Engineering.

“To receive this scholarship is a prestigious honor,” said Haugsland, chair of the Harvard Business School Club of Wisconsin Scholarship Committee. “The rigors of the one-week immersion at Harvard Business School is indeed a life- and career-altering experience.”

Since 1998, the club has granted more than 40 scholarships to nonprofit executives.

The winners of the scholarships last year included: Virginia Duiven, executive director of Literacy Services of Wisconsin; Jeffrey C. Martinka, executive director of Neighborhood House of Milwaukee Inc.; John Bloor, executive director of The Threshold Incorporated; and Dennis C. Kois, president and CEO of Milwaukee Public Museum.

To qualify, applicants must have at least one year of experience as president, CEO or executive director of a nonprofit organization focusing on human services, health care, education, community development, the environment or a related area.

The organizations they represent must have a minimum of five full-time employees, an annual operating budget of at least $1 million and have been fully operational for at least one year.

The announcement of the 2017 winners will come later this spring at the Wisconsin Business Leader of the Year Dinner, sponsored by the Harvard Business School Club of Wisconsin and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Proceeds from the annual event, which will be held April 25 at the Pfister Hotel in downtown Milwaukee, will help fund the scholarship awards.

The scholarship application is available at www.hbs-wi.com. The deadline for submitting an application is March 1.
