Badgers, Gophers draw
The top-ranked Wisconsin women’s hockey team earned a 1-1 tie with a top-five team for a second straight week as the Badgers and No. 4 Minnesota battled to a draw Saturday in Minneapolis.
The Gophers (23-5-4, 19-4-4-2 Big Ten) got on the board first when Nicole Schammel scored in the second period.
The Badgers (27-2-3, 22-2-3-3) evened things up in the third period with Sarah Nurse’s goal.
LACROSSE
Fourteen players scored for No. 20 Marquette as the Golden Eagles opened the season with a 17-1 victory over Jacksonville in Florida. Johns Hopkins women 12, Marquette 10: The Golden Eagles opened their home season with their third straight loss to a top-20 opponent.
BASEBALL
UW-Milwaukee lost its second straight game to start the season, falling to Lamar, 6-0, on Saturday in the Cardinal Classic in Beaumont, Texas.
The Panthers were held to only five hits a day after dropping their opener, 10-2, to Illinois following a six-hour rain delay.
The Panthers (1-2) earned their first win of the season by defeating Illinois, 4-2, in their second game Saturday. .
SOFTBALL
Wisconsin extended its best start in program history in the first of two games by escaping with a 3-2 victory over Saint Joseph’s for its seventh straight win.
The Badgers (7-1) managed only one hit as they were shut out, 4-0, by No. 14 James Madison (6-1) in their second game at the MS Pediatric Cancer Foundation Invitational in Clearwater, Fla.
SWIMMING
The Wisconsin team of Chase Kinney, Emmy Sehmann, Marissa Berg and Cierra Runge won the 400yard freestyle relay at the Big Ten women’s championships in West Lafayette, Ind. UW finished third in the team standings behind champion Michigan and runner-up Indiana.
